Nice piece.
Great piece, Stef - thanks! I had known that her husband was an advisor to (or as they say here "private secretary and friend of") President Roosevelt, but never knew much at all about his wife - until now. Fascinating!!
I've learned something new today - thanks
Doug
Thank you so much for the "Heads Up", Stef! I had been wanting to read it, but I had not been on the look out for it, as I often have trouble accessing The Herald thru my browser.
I loved the bit about the unusual terms of her father's will! I wonder exactly which Bordens were involved in that feud?
The piece also made me wonder if Lizzie ever met the Roosevelts. Ah, to be a fly on that wall!
Thanks, Stefani! Looks like Grace could go in our famous women from here, there, and everywhere thread. It would be interesting to see a woman other than Lizzie representing Fall River.

Does anyone else find Louis Howe's middle name (McHenry) a tad bit interesting?
Maybe it is just the genealogist in me coming out!

I'm beginning to think Victorian Fall River was rife with inbreeding.
As for the Genealogy:
Cook Borden214 was brother to Abraham Borden208
Cook's214 daughter was Mary J.232, who married Dr. James W. Hartley, May 1, 1853.
Their daughter was Grace Hartley.
Abraham's208 son was Andrew218.
His daughter was Lizzie224
Hence, Grace and Lizzie's grandfather's were brothers.
Interesting. Looks like Dr James had inlaw trouble. Thanks, Kat!
Kat,
Another way to put it is Andrew Borden and Mary J. (Borden) Hartly were first cousins. And they were both first cousins to Mary C. (Borden) Brayton.

Thanks, Stefani, very interesting reading! I wonder who was the cause of those stipulations about Grace ever marrying a Borden, very odd!
Ladowick was also a brother of Cook and Abraham. Ladowick had 3 or 4 wives and one of them, at the time they were living at #96 Second Street, drowned her children and comitted suicide.
interesting stuff, thanks
Abraham had 9 siblings, and one, Andrew, died young.
There is plenty of room just in that group there for scandle or a con-job or a theft or whatever bugged the guy with the will.
Who's to say it was that branch of Bordens anyway? We would need more background.
But it's certainly interesting.
