Is the Fall River Police Department's moto really "we'll try"? Or is this just something they put on the non-official patches so they can tell them from the real ones?

Ohmigosh! I never noticed that before. That's kinda like a t-shirt from a beach resort that says, "Not a really terrible place to spend a vacation." What I wonder is whether that was their motto in 1892. Might explain a lot.

Good grief! Don't they realize how weak that sounds?
It was probably meant to put a more human touch on their public image but it certainly doesn't inspire confidence.

Actually that's only part of the slogan. It really says, "We'll Try Harder NEXT Time!!!"
They aren't Hertz or Avis but they're working on it.
Hope there's not F.R. Police Officers on the forum...guess I will have to drive slower next time I'm in ole Fall Rev...

They had a chance to TRY HARDER in the Bertha Manchester case (of which Harry is an expert), but it seems they were still just *trying*...(got their requiset Portuguese foreigner in THAT one....)

Thats horrible! We try. I guess thats all that you can ask of anyone that they try their best, but, its not very inspiring in the confidence department!

That sounds like it came from the Lake Woebegone PD. "All of our officers are better than average."

The Fall River Police Dept. site has these as their official badges. The first one is pre-1970. The We'll Try patch IS the one worn today.

The police department badges reminded me about the Fall River Police Department site. I notice they've now taken out the Lizzie area. They used to have the arrest record pictured there among other things. They still indicate there's a link to Lizzie Borden stuff -- but I got the 'page expired' notice when I clicked on to it.
In the official documents 1890+ section, they show the FRPD handcuffs of that time -- and they say that these handcuffs may have been used on Lizzie Borden. Was she actually handcuffed -- when she was arrested? on trial? I can't conjure up that picture. Is there another source for that information? Oddly I never thought of her in handcuffs. (But then I also never realized that Morse and Bridget each had to post $500 bail either until I saw that Almay had paid it -- and, as Harry pointed out, that would be about $9,000 today.)
I guess that's what keeps me coming back to the case. There's always something new to discover.

If factory workers earned $10 a week (80 hours), then $500 should be more like $40,000 today (factory yearly pay).
You could also compare price of houses, and food, for a multiplier.
Even the price of gold can vary.

Rays, $500 in 1892 money adjusted for inflation is worth $9462.84 in todays money. Thats from 1892 to 2001. Check it for yourself at:

There is some great biographical info on Fall River Police Chiefs in this section of the Fall River Police Dept.'s web site. Unfortunately, the Lizzie Links is dead as is the link to the Fall River Historical Society.
