Did any policeman dig deeper into - what screen she was going to fix with the piece of tin from the barn ?

Post by Steve88778 »

I read that they just checked all the screens in the house - so my question is, when Lizzie said that she needed a piece of tin or iron did they ask what specifically needed to be done ? Did they bother to go with her to the broken screen in question ? Remember the doors had screens on them as well..
You can stop wondering why Lizzie was aquitted...

Those are great questions! Yes, Lizzie should’ve been asked to show the broken screen. But, what if she were able to produce such a screen? We’d still be back to square one. Maybe she didn’t lie about the screen but she was still guilty of murder.

If Lizzie had been asked at the Inquest, she would have likely said that Alice was mistaken in what she thought she heard Lizzie say. That makes it 'he said, she said'.....which this case had more than its share of.

Lizzie's testimony at the inquest was full of contradictions and iterative story changes/enhancements.....another shift or contradiction on the screen repair wouldn't have made any difference. She had the morphine excuse to cover her from Aug 5th onward.

Many of the witness and inquest contradictions were noted at the trial . But the defense was able to defang most of the prosecutions witnesses without calling Lizzie to the stand.

True - that house was loaded with clues. The DA and the City Marshall - did what they do best - Charge people of crimes with absolutely no shred of evidence. Maybe they should have called the Pinkertons to do the job.
My favorite clue to this day is handleless hatchet. You have Lizzie Borden who was ultimately under suspicion. telling the maid where to get the bucket or box of hatchets. - Oh it gets better. For some reason there are some axes and hatchets in the box OK - but then there is one handleless hatchet that was broken - stay with me it gets better. Now to focus the attention on that - it is covered with a dust unlike the other hatchets. Now the police are focused on that. Oh it get better yet !! - they are so obsessed with that hatchet that looks different that they take that in for testing - and of course no human blood is to be found. And lastly how is it that Assistant Marshall Fleet never finds the handle and - Medley or Mulally ( I get them mixed up ) finds it. Embarrassed the whole force.

I was under the impression she had gone to find lead to make a sinker or sinkers to go fishing. This bit I remember because my father took my siblings and I fishing and as we used bait, we used lead sinkers so I knew what that was. Granted, I’ve not read up on the case but don’t recall anything having to do with screens in the movie

Hi Mary. Immediately after Andrews killing, Lizzie told a few versions of where she was when he was killed. Fixing a screen was one of those versions. The fishing sinker story didn’t surface until her uncle Harrington mentioned it to a reporter Thursday night. Lizzie then maintained that explanation at the inquest.

Yes - she did mention she wanted a piece of tin or iron to fix her screen. I don't know what she meant by her screen. And the dumb bunny fall river police never challenged the screens thing. Considering they did not have any screens on the windows of that house.
The only screens or screen I could think of was the screen door.
That screen fix thing was absolutely ridiculous and the fall river police department should have picked up on it. That task would have taken all but 2 minutes to realize there are no screens on the windows. Maybe someone stole the screens in the middle of the night and wasn't reported.Image
