THANKS for the good news Lee-Ann. How nice it will be to be able to see the back and south side of the house.

Wish I could be there with an axe or a hatchet to help bring it down.

As far as Wednesday went, it was raining pretty hard in the morning and we only have one vehicle at the moment, so I didn't try to get to F.R., figuring the work might be postponed on account of the weather. Turns out it was, I guess, from Lee-Ann's report. Thursday through Saturday, I work, so I'm out of the picture.

I'm hoping Lee-Ann and Mark are taking pictures.

I wish there was a web-cam so we could watch the progress as it happens ! But if we can at least see an occasional picture, that will be great !

Tracy, you always have your finger on the pulse of things!! Yes, there will be photos of the demolition-----in the next issue of The Hatchet. Complete with some stories about it as well from witnesses and others.

The next issue is due out June 1st, but I might be persuaded to post one or two here for the eager among you. Gotta sell that magazine, you know!

I'm glad I got inside the Leary Press building during my visit to Fall River last October. Someday people will say, "Do you remember the old press building...?"

The article says the press building was constructed in the 1940s. But there exists a photo showing at least the front of the building near the sidewalk (south side of the house) in the early 1920s. I don't know if the portion of the building in the rear of the house was there then, too.

The photo referred to can be found in Edmund Pearson's book, Studies in Murder.

That's great news Stef ! I think a few 'teaser' photos would definitely get a few more folks to say "I WANT MY HATCHET !!!"

I am glad I got to go inside the old building a few times too ! It reminded my of my grandfather's old printshop...the smell...the desks...the papers...the lighting...everything.

There must be sections of the clapboard being uncovered that haven't been painted since the 1920s. What color are they? It would be interesting to do some testing on them to see what colors are underneath, since there would be less layers than on the rest of the house.

I think that's the best idea, to check down until the last layer if they can.

A bit of history is gone. I suspect the existence and use of the press building saved the Borden house from demolition (the fate of many of its neighbors) or remodeling (ala the Kelly house next door). That said, it will be interesting to see the outside of the Borden house looking more as it did in 1892.

The sun is shining through one of the actual windows that Bridget was washing that day for the first time in years...I bet it is an awesome sight.

Having the first floor south side of the house exposed to sunlight and air again must change the whole "feeling" of the downstairs. A change for the better!

I found the atmosphere (karma, feng shui, whatever) in that room oppressive & just plain *terrible*. I hope the windows provide some positive release. Good to hear it.

Such great news!!!
I have to be honest that the first time I saw the house (with the Leary Press attached), I was very dissappointed. It seemed to diminish some of the mystery, and atmosphere of the house. Good riddence!

I had a conversation with Ed when I was there a couple of years ago, and he mentioned how he would have liked to have backlit window inserts, printed with rendered views of the side yard as it appeared in 1892, which would give the illusion that the Leary Building was not there. I even made a few 3D views based on my models, which I was intending to send to him as a hoot. But to actually have the sun beaming in after 50 plus years is just amazing!

LeeAnn, I am thrilled that you guys released the old girl from the clutches of Leary! I'm surprised by how excited I am about this news!

LeeAnn,
I have read many times that when houses are being worked on, it stirs up the spirits belonging to the house, and people seem to pick up more hauntings at that time. Did you or anyone else sense any extra activity in the house during the demolition?

No more activity than usual. Things may get stirred up when we work on the inside, but outside, nothing yet. Although Eleanor is convinced that Mr. McGinn, Martha's grandfather, was in his print shop the week leading up to the demo having one last look around.
Just posted a few more pics on the website, and we've also added the 'dust' to the online giftshop. We raised the price to $10....sorry, but it had to be done. We just got the bill for tearing down Leary. It was what I expected it to be....but still....$OUCH$

Spectacular, Lee-ann!
I find it pretty amazing that the Leary Press "peeled" away from the house so cleanly, and with so much of the original house still intact beneath!
Seeing daylight coming through the sitting room windows is an amazing sight!
Congratulations! I hope what you are doing is being appreciated by the town (and State, for that matter!).
