Hello from Fall River everyone
Hey everybody. I'm a relatively new face on the forum here, so I figured I'd take this opportunity to introduce myself and say hello.
Like many of you-- okay, all of you-- I've always been fascinated by Lizzie Borden and the murders on Second Street all those years ago. I was pleased to stumble across this society several weeks ago (yes, I began here as a lurker) and eager to get some time to join and start posting. Everyone here seems so passionate about their interest in the case, and so well-informed, so I know I'm in a good place.
I was born and raised in Fall River, not far from the Borden home, so the "legend" of Lizzie Borden has always been a part of my life. For a while, the name Lizzie Borden was such a common part of my vocabulary, I never stopped to think about just how big the case was. I rarely reflected on the huge impact it had in Massachusetts and the entire nation, and didn't fully appreciate it for what it was, you could say.
As I've gotten older, my interest in the case has grown and I recognize how over a century later, it still captivates people across the country. I now live just over the FR line in Westport, a town with just as rich and exciting a history, and I'm not too far from the historic sites so many of you have had the chance to visit.
I look forward to talking with all of you!
Phill

Welcome, Phill.
We have a growing number of "locals" here, and it's always nice to see another join.
nbcatlover was telling me not long ago that she feels if the case is solved, the key to the mystery will not be within Fall River itself, but in one of the surrounding communities.
So keep your eyes open.
Glad to have you with us.

HI!
Can you clear up a question we have?
When we stayed in Westport last year, we were told about a haunted slab- that used to be a foundation of a house...and some tragedy was ennacted there and they had to tear the house down because no one would buy it? I think it was murder- and a haunting?
Anyway, it's near the graveyard, near The Hampton Inn there.
Do you know the name of the case? Or the name of the family so we can search it out on the internet?
Thanks!

Welcome aboard Phill baby!
You can send your Forum fees in cash or money order to me at... Just kidding
You are fortunate to be living there in Fall River. I'd give my right arm to be scouting around the Borden house and surounding sites. Here in California we have the Manson Gang, Ed Kemper, Zodiac Killer and a bunch of other wacko freaks but none as interesting as the Borden Case. There is a lot of good stuff here on the Borden murders that you won't find on those TV shows or even in some books.
Enjoy the ride and have fun.

The rumor was that the house near The Hampton Inn was buried over an Indian graveyard. Their spirits would come out of the ground near a big rock in the yard and invade the house driving out the white people who stole their lands.
Quite a few years back, there were endless stories on the local radio stations about this house around Halloween, and I drove by it. It was a relatively new house which was boarded up and being allowed to fall apart in a fairly nice neighborhood.
Another story I heard about the house is that it had been owned by an undertaker. He waked the body of a family member in the house for an inordinately long time, and the dead person's spirit took over the house.
I'm sorry I don't remember more of these. I do remember the debunking story. The property, which is not in a conspicuous location, was built without the necessary building permits and the town denied the owner/builder an occupancy permit because it was not up to code. (Not nearly as interesting, though I don't know if it is anymore true than the far-superior ghost stories.)
I guess it might be time for another road-trip. I'm not sure, but I believe the road is Old Bedford Road in Westport. I do know that I found my way there by driving through the side-street off Rt. 6 which separates White's of Westport from The Hampton Inn (same owner). The road is in back of The Hampton Inn running parallel to 195.
I think the stories reached their height of popularity in the mid-nineties. I believe some fraternity from UMass-Dartmouth had rented a house near there and had some infamous keg parties. There were dozens of sightings reported by the numerous beer-imbibers which kept the story mill turning for sometime. Think in the 'urban legend' mode.
I do know that on Horseneck Road in Westport (not to be confused with Rt. 88 to Horseneck Beach) near the Allen's Pond area, heading away from West Beach Road, there was the famous Woman in White who would appear on the right side of the road on foggy nights and try to hail people in passing cars. If someone stopped and tried to talk to her, she would disappear. But the people in the car would always note a cold spot in the interior of the car until they reached Rt. 6. Many have speculated that they carried a ghostly passenger to her unknown destination. I've seen her myself, many years ago.

I have seen "the woman in white."
I have actually had 'ghost' activity in my house, but for me, they don't really count 'cause their relatives. My previous second-floor tenants used to see one of my aunts a lot. She was only in her early 20s when she died, and since these tenants were also young, I think she was attracted to them. And their little girl used to stay up nights talking to my other aunt, Mary. The little girl said Aunt Mary was living in her bedroom closet. Since she was three, we didn't think she was lying. Her room was Aunt Mary's old bedroom. Things are pretty quiet since they moved.
I don't have any 'names' connected to the Westport house. If I get a chance to drive by there soon, I'll jot down the address so I can look up the property at the Fall River Registry of Deeds.
I have heard a rumor that it's been rehabbed and is now occupied.

My t-shirts from Stefani's cafepress store arrived yesterday, Oct 26th. It was one year to the day that I arrived in Fall River and seen 92 second street in person for the first time. Today Oct 27th is one year to the day since I stayed at 92 second street. I had hoped to make it there again about a month ago but there were a few personal things that came up and I never really planned ahead for this vacation like I did for my last one, so I decide to put it off till the spring. Sure I could go in the winter, but I don't want to go on vacation in the snow.
I have been thinking about what it must be like to grow up in Fall River. Obviously the Residents are used to the Lizzie story, so it would be a lot different for them than it would be to people not from Fall River. I have been trying to compare it with something that one city has that another city does not have. For example my hometown is on the ocean and we have mountains here. That may be something to someone from the praires as the praires may be something to someone from here. But that is not a good comparison. There are many cities that are on the ocean and there are many cities that are on the praires. There is only one Lizzie Borden and there is only one Fall River that is famous for being her hometown.

What is a Picture, but the capture of a moment in time.
