The Hatchet, Issue #5 (October 2004) is Online!

After three hurricanes in six weeks, and only four days late, issue #5 of The Hatchet: Journal of Lizzie Borden Studies has been placed online for your reading pleasure. This fifth issue is 66 pages in length and includes some informative and interesting essays by both new and familiar authors.

IMPORTANT: If your web browser does not load the new page, don't forget to hit your browser's refresh button to make it seek out the new uploaded version of the web site. As a suggested fix, empty your browser's cashe to insure you are loading the update and not the one stored on your hard drive!



Once again there are two ways to access your copy: (1) you can log in and read it online page by page, or (2) log in and download a PDF copy and save it to your hard drive to read offline at your leisure. Late Breaking News: The date and time has been finalized for the airing of the Discovery Channel's documentary on Lizzie Borden. It will be on cable TV on Saturday, Oct. 30th, at 9PM, EST---just in time for Halloween. It is titled "Lizzie Borden Had an Axe." We have an article by the show's producer, Tim Evans, in this issue!

If any of you have Lizzie Borden parties that night, or dress up as Lizzie for Halloween, please take photos and send them to The Hatchet. We would love to publish them next issue.

Every other month I get a little depressed that my tightwad New England ways inhibit me from subscribing to The Hatchet.

Any thought of posting selected articles from back issues on the website for the "Andrews" among us?

On second thought, there's a considerable cost associated with operating the kind of site you do. I should be grateful for how much free stuff you provide us with already.

Please disregard my suggestion. I'm a cheapskate. I deserve to suffer.

I'm still eagerly reading the latest issue, but it is clear that you've hit another home run with this issue. Kudos to all involved, and keep up the stellar work!
PS: LOVE the photo of you holding the famous handleless hatchet, Kat. It must have been one of those "dream come true" moments!

Tim said I said his favorite line in the video- which was "It's Beautiful!"
I remember that but at the time it just seemed wonderful to be handed the hatchet head. I was in awe.
Later, I am blushing a bit at such a reaction.
But Stefani said "Imagine, Knowlton handled that, Jennings, Wood, the jury and it came from the Borden cellar!"

i can't cover it all, but i'd like to say a few things:

nice pic of pleasant street on pg 6 -- appears uncredited, but i like it, however it came about. example of continued improvements in graphics/illustrations of the magazine.

tv programs by tim evans -- such tantalizing stuff, and apparently taken very seriously! author sounds "hooked."

excellent and much-needed research on ruby cameron story by j carlson, d griffiths & kathryn. admirable depth to it all.

m.e. naugle -- best compilation of physical descriptions of lizzie i've ever seen.

sherry -- thanks for handy's place now -- your talent for finding places most appreciated.

last but not least -- tina's vl & lizzie cartoon!

Thank you, Haulover for liking the "If Looks Could Kill" article. (And belated thank you to Kat for liking last issue's poem!) I'd just seen so many conflicting descriptions that I decided we needed to group and sort them. They turned out to be even more contradictory than I expected. It was really fun to put together.

As for everyone else--kudos all round! It was great how one issue gathered together so many pieces on Ruby. Was that planned or mere serendipity? Anyway, I have finally got a handle on what Ruby said, who Ruby was, and what Ruby probably could and couldn't know. Also remarkable, was how little overlap there was from story to story: each one covered separate aspects in unique and thorough ways. Also enlightening were the Victoria Lincoln story and cartoon. Thanks to everyone for an enlightening and enjoyable read!

I just had Jay print out THE HATCHET for me (he was not working out of his office for a few weeks), and I loved the story behind the upcoming documentary. As an old Lincolnian (?), I'm looking forward to the piece on Vicky's famous volume. I just had a few moments to spare last night after I got home, as I'm knee-deep (literally - you should see all the stuff I've accrued over the years!) in Halloween preparations.

It was great how one issue gathered together so many pieces on Ruby. Was that planned or mere serendipity?

Lyddie, Joe decided a while ago he was still interested in Ruby and so we talked about what form that interest might take. Then Diana seperately wrote to me the same thing and so we wrote each other what form she wished her empahasis to take. I sort of coordinated the two so there was minimum overlap but their areas of interest seemed to compliment each other naturally. That's when I thought of interviewing Dr. William's to sort of round out Ruby as someone somebody had really met and taked to.
We loved the labour, and these two are fine writers and wonderful to work with.

Dr. William's was very gracious to "meet" with me over the phone. It was exciting to see everyone's work pulled together like that!
