If you want to crow, I'll grouse! Its 15 degrees here, headed for 18. This is the warmest morning temp in several days, we've been sub-zero overnight for the last week with highs in the single digits.

Wow, Yooper, you've got us beat! It's been 4 degrees, but never below zero, with snow and ice here in the heartland. Ah, to be in the sunny south again...sigh.

I’m in the Pacific Northwest; right up by the Canadian border. We usually skate by with grey clouds and rain, but with warm with minimal cold weather (and usually not ‘till Jan/Feb) I still had roses blooming in my yard several weeks ago.

But we are going on 2 and ½ weeks of snow and VERY cold weather for us. This morning at 05:30 it was 11 degrees. I looked at the forecast for the next couple of days.

We are looking at snow again tomorrow (the 20th) and Sun……then again on the 24th, 25th, and 26th…………Bbbbbbbbbbbrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

So much for shorts, t-shirts and a wind breaker………we’ve searched out our boots and gloves and have dug in. With the snow and the wind chill, it makes walking the dog at night VERY interesting!!

You back East can have your weather back any time now….lol......

Storm warnings all night---but I headed out this morning & the roads were just fine for biking.

Half hour after I got to work, the snow storm hit & has been raging since. I'll have a "fun" time getting home again.

Well, I must say being down here in south Florida is much better than Maryland. The weather is perfect, my house is always open with tropical breezes blowing through the palms trees around my house, I am still wearing shorts and sandals..what more could one want?

Of course, having the Christmas tree and decorations up is taking a bit of getting used to.

The snow up here in Massachusetts is more of a nuisance than anything else.

One day on the way home from work it toke me three days to get home.

The first night I slept in my car, in the middle lane of RT 95 with over a foot of snow and cars all around me. The second and third night I spent on the floor at the Y, sleeping in the Gym with 200 other people.

On the third day I walked 15 miles home down RT 195 completely devoid of traffic.

I could not find my car for almost a week, since they towed all the cars on the highway and placed them, without record, anywhere they could find a spot.

After treading throughout Providence for an entire day, I finally found my car by the side of the road 5 miles away, in the breakdown lane up RT 95.

There will never be a snow storm that will ever faze me again.

But, here are a couple of shots taken tonight.

Just some "EYE" candy.

There's supposed to be more coming on Sunday.

Yes, 10 a.m. and two shots at the end of storm number 1, one shot from the west and another from the east. One of the Hooper house and the other of Maplecroft.

Even in the snow, which has the potential to enhance the beauty of a building, it does very little for these two buildings.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

To revel the weird nature of many living on French Street, the owner of Maplecroft has just plowed out his entire driveway, then moved his car and struggled to park it in the street.

This is a street where parking is at a premium and at times can be impossible to park near your home.

Why would someone plow his driveway and park both his cars in the street and take up spaces dearly needed by residents in the neighborhood during a snow storm?

Is it greed?

Does he fear others parking in front of his house?

Is it just plain bitter vengefulness?

I can say this. It is not fair.

Why take up space on a street, during a snow storm or otherwise, where many need parking when you have a large driveway and yard, you just plowed, that can fit a good number of cars?

RHETORICAL QUESTIONS YOU UNDERSTAND, FOR WHICH I KNOW THE ANSWER.

Maybe it was Lizzie who set the stage for WEIRDNESS ON FRENCH STREET.

Great photos, MB!

Kinda treacherous going down the hills though. Wonder if Lizzie brought the sleigh that was in the barn to Maplecroft. She did have a pony cart when there.

If I had a plowed driveway and that much room to park cars I'd invite a few cars in to share the space during the snow emergency.

Florida? Thanx, but no for me! ;) Ive had 27 years in South Florida, Lake Worth also for a coulpe years. Our winter snow right now is fine with me, we dont usually get a lot here in western Washington state. Its too hot and humid for me in Florida most of the time! I must say though, some of the time, when Florida has nice weather with a cool breeze, its paradise....

It was -10 this morning, driving 15 miles east to Marquette yielded a gain of 17 degrees to 7 above. Just the change in elevation, about 1000 feet, and proximity to Lake Superior makes a difference.

I saw the storm coming to the UP on the TV!
Whew!

Some New Hampshire friends were out of power last week for 33 hours. Just stay in bed for warmth!

It was 80 degrees again today and forecast for Sunday. Then a cool spree Monday 56 at night only 72 in the day but warming up nicely for Christmas!

Right now we have a temperature of around -10°, with winds averaging around 15mph, gusting up to 41mph, which gives us a wind chill reading between -25° to -36°. Needless to say, it's a bit chilly out there!!!

So far, our seasonal snowfall total is over 30 inches, and just think, today is the first day of winter!!! Makes me wonder what is ahead for the months of January, February and March.

Power outages are always a possibility here, that's why I have a free standing wood fireplace in the living room. It works a little too well sometimes, it can get warm enough to drive you right out of the room! I have to be careful with it because the heat from the living room spills over into the dining room where the thermostat for the furnace is located. The heat gives the thermostat a false high reading and prevents the furnace from running when it should. The rest of the house cools off as a result. I need to move the thermostat to one of the back bedrooms, away from the wood stove!

Those old "octopus" coal and wood furnaces had a lot going for them. There was no blower on the furnace, just huge ducts about 18-24 inches in diameter. Heat rises, so it just rose through the ducts throughout the house. If the house had multiple stories, there were wooden or metal grates in the ceiling/floor between the stories and the heat could simply rise to the higher floors after heating the one below. There was often a device used to regulate the draft which would regulate the amount of heat from the furnace, this being a chain connected to the draft flap on the furnace. The other end could be found in a room usually directly over the furnace, sometimes in the baseboard on one wall. Just pull the chain and hook it for more heat, and release the chain and hook it for less heat!

There was work associated with the coal and wood furnaces, they had to be fueled manually and the ashes and clinkers removed. Several places I've lived in the past were either primarily or secondarily heated with wood. You get used to feeding the furnace after a short time, it really isn't a difficulty.

Enough rambling! It's sixteen degrees and snowing like crazy! Light fluffy stuff though, easy shoveling!

Thanks for pictures! Cool!

Hey Yooper- thanks for the story about heat!

We are plunging 10 degrees lower than expected tonight- instead of 56 it might get down to 46. But it will feel like 44.

I know I know...but they actually say that on the Weather.

16 degrees and snowing there Yooper? At the moment here, there's a roughly 75 degree difference 'twixt the temp inside and outside. (It was just about -5 degrees when I checked the window thermometer a bit ago.) According to the latest and most reliable filthy rumor from the weather folks, Wednesday will be our heat wave - a balmy 41 degrees, with one day more 'round the end of the month projected at 47.

-3 here tonight with some light snow forecast. That last snowfall got to be considerable, even though it was lightweight snow! I'm running out of room to put it, and we're not through December! There's a fire hydrant next to the street near my house and it is covered by a six foot snowbank. Even the flag they attach to the top of it so they can find it in the snow is buried! Still, better this than forty below temperatures. I can shovel snow but I can't shovel cold!

There's actually a post-script to that though. Not more than ten minutes after I posted that last night (it was much closer to five) our power here went out, stayed off for about three hours. Fun?? Not so much...

Some interesting snowfall figures, our current total for the season is 113.6 inches so far, normal snowfall is 64.7 inches for the same time period. We could be on our way to a record year, but it would have to exceed 300 inches total.

Twenties and thirties with fairly light dustings of snow in New York and in Philadelphia, where I spent the holiday weekend. Slippery in spots.

It's 33 degrees in the Florida night. They are expecting a hard freeze- that's when it's below 32 degrees for about 8 hours. It sweetens the citrus fruit as long as one deep frost doesn't kill it.

Right now we have a temperature reading of 22° F, feels like 9° F. Wind is 13 mph, gusting to 23 mph. So, that's not too bad. However, more bitterly cold wind chills are on the way - an arctic blast is expected to spread into southern Wisconsin tonight, resulting in bitterly cold air temperatures below zero by early Saturday morning. Wind chill readings of 15 to 25 below zero are expected across the area.

Oh yippee, I'm really looking forward to that!
Yeah, right!

We have a snowstorm on the way, twelve to eighteen inches is forecast. The snow pack has taken a beating for the last week or so, we had some unseasonably warm weather, even a bit of rain. We've had over 180 inches total so far, approaching normal levels for an entire season, and we're about half way through the snow season! Temperatures have been a bit warmer recently, teens to twenties most days.

I have been talking to folks in KY who have been out of power since the Holidays! In this day and age! Jeesh! It puts my cold weather in persepective- also my power outages in the summer due to hurricanes,. These people are cold!

Some are still out. Some were out for 4 days. There are some still in hotels, or bunking with other family or using generators!

Power outages tend to be more frequent and more protracted in rural areas. They can be dealt with if folks are aware of the possibility and plan accordingly. If you're not too quick to get rid of the hand-pump well, the wood stove, and the two-holer out back, you can get by well enough. If the weather supports it, food can be kept cold or frozen outdoors if precautions are taken. People lived without modern conveniences for a longer time than they have lived with them, so it certainly can be done, but it makes you appreciate the conveniences when a power outage occurs! I have to agree though, a two month outage does seem excessive

Yes I keep hearing how wonderful these wood stoves are!

Families have moved their elders to more comfortable surroundings and the younger folks are house sitting in the mean time!

I think they are getting restoration of service about now.

Did I hear about bad tornadoes in GA and NC tonight or was someone fibbing to me? Some told me they were ducking for cover!

85? We had a three day heat wave here in California a couple weeks ago at 98! Unfortunately it was too hot to BBQ!

There is nothing like a good flat-top wood stove when the power goes out. You can heat the home, cook on it, heat your water for coffee, hot chocolate, tea, bath water, whatever.

We have been having temps in the high 50's to lower 70's during the day for about two weeks now. During the night it cools down to the high 40's so that you can open a window and sleep like a baby.

This is my kind of weather!

Mine too Judy.

Even in the winter I have to sleep with a window open. I cannot take a warm room, I never could. Naomi Judd talked in her auto-bio about arguing with her daughter over the temprature in their tour bus at night. Naomi liked her bedroom toasty warm and Wynonna liked hers cold enough to "hang meat in." I side with Wynonna on that.

Ever since I can remember there are two things I could never tolerate; a warm bedroom and light. I could not sleep unless a window was open, the room was cool and pitch black. I stuffed towels under the door to block out any light. Sleeping over at my friend's house was murder. His parents were smokers and didn't permit windows being open. I laid awake all night feeling like I was suffocating. To this day I can't stand to be around smokers or sleep in a warm room.
