From his wife, Andree:
Each of his injuries was manageable, but all of his injuries together couldn't be overcome. Please don't rail against the bike or the circumstances or the driver of the car. Father Daryl reminded me that God doesn't make accidents happen; they are just exactly that: accidents. Sometimes we, all of us I think, forget that prayers are answered, but it's not my will be done--it's Thy will be done, another reminder from Father Daryl.
He was cared for by the best and most knowledgeable people at the University of Kentucky hospital, and everything thing medically possible that could be done for him was done.
I would not wish back one single second of the time we spent on the bike or the pure joy Joe had when we were riding. There's so much to say, but none of it adequate. The greatest honor of my life was to have been loved by Joe. The greatest honor any of you could do him is to care for others the way he cared for everyone: without limits.

Condolences can be sent to Andree Carlson at P.O. Box 858, Berea, KY, 40403.
