Looking for a "Pete" Peterson article.

Post by FairhavenGuy »

Although I guess rnold Brown got his hands on most of the original material, I just reread the first two parts of Linda Andrade Rodrigues three-part series in which she interviewed Lewis "Pete" Peterson, the son-in-law of Henry Hawthorne. These ran in the Spectator (Somerset) the Advocate (Fairhaven) and probably the Chronicle (Dartmouth).

There are a few parts of Pete's story that were, I think, left out of Arnold Brown's retelling/fictionalization. One is the claim that Ellan (Sweeney) Eagan was friends with Bridget Sullivan and "stopped and chatted" with Bridget while she was washing windows on the south side of the house on August 4. And as she left, the man she later identified as William Borden bumped into her as he came out of the Borden's yard.

There are a couple of other interesting tidbits, too.

Unfortunately, I do not have PART THREE of the three-part series. This would be from March 27, 1997.

Anybody have a copy I could read?

Maybe I should just contact Linda Rodriques. I used to work with her at Hathaway Publishing. . .
I've met Kat and Harry and Stef, oh my!

The Hatchet was given reprint permission by the publishers and Linda cooperated fully in the project. Harry and I met with Linda and I interviewed her in New Bedford.
The story was published in The Hatchet Nov/Dec 2007. That issue had the young new Andrew Borden portrait as cover.
I thinkit may have been a free download at one time at The Hatchet site. It's not up there now- the Wheaton College issue is there.

Thanks, Kat, I'll check to see if I have that issue already, but I think I'd remember the pieces by Linda.

Last time Stef was in my office I was telling her how I'd written a couple of short anonymous pieces on Lizzie when I was editor of Hathaway Publishing's "Gateway to Cape Cod." Linda contributed some article for me to use in that. When I left Hathaway in 1987, Linda took my place as the special sections editor.

(My short pieces are mentioned in Rebello, but not my name, because I didn't credit myself as the author of many of the those short bits that I contributed as the editor.)

An added note: If you and Harry have been through this with Linda, I'm sure that anything of any real interest has been explored.
