An excellent piece, Denise! I hadn't thought of the "Scottsboro 9" for years. If memory serves, I first read Scottsboro: A Tragedy of the American South back in the middle 1980s.
I staid the night for shelter at a farm behind the mountains, with a mother and son - two "old-believers." They did all the talking...
