Check out this video on the "haunting" of the Lizzie Borden house.

I have been there many times and never had a scary moment. Have any of you?

There is only thing that happened to me that I cannot explain. I stayed in the Morse room and kept a small recorder turned on next to the bed while I slept. The recorder had been on for four hours during that evening, had new batteries in it, and was supposed to be able to run for 18 hours. However, when I got up the next morning, the recorder had been turned off about an hour after I had fallen asleep.

well i wouldn't call them scary experiences, just strange.
I visited again in May this year. I was in the kitchen with lee ann and some other guests making cups of tea when i felt a strange vibration under my feet. i didnt think anything of it, and thought everyone else could feel it, until after a minute or so of feeling it, i was about to turn around and ask what the vibration was when i could have sworn i was pushed - almost like a 'get out of my way' push - which is fine except that meant the person pushing needed to be coming out of the cupboard. The push was enough to make me move from my spot.

perhaps Mr Borden doesnt like me. after all i did say just before this incident that i could understand why Lizzie would kill him

I have a question?

After the Borden murders 92 Second street sat there for over 100 years, with several owners and occupants.

No haunting.

Why have the spirits chosen the 21 century to begin haunting?

No one, no story that I can remember, was ever reported in the paper, or by rumor, talk, hearsay, about ghosts or spirits or a haunting at the Second Street house. Why now?

Have visitors incited the haunting?

Has something awaken the spirits?

Or are the patrons and workers haunted?

When I visited the last time, Kat and I were alone in the kitchen. I had the DISTINCT feeling that I was going to fart. And I didn't.

Explain that.

Kashesan - maybe you have great muscle control

Keep in mind i wasn't there to have explicitly have a haunted experience - just experienced a strange situation that i cannot explain easily.
Actually, i saw something - maybe on stefani's channel on YouTube - where Martha McGinn talks about her experiences as a teenager in the house?...

Regarding the 21st century hauntings... i'm also curious as to whether there were any hauntings experienced by the Bordens and subsequent owners. I thought a lot about this while i was in the house and came up with many theories as to why there would be an increase in reported activity or experiences.

One idea was that perhaps people want the house to be haunted (preferably by the Borden's!) because it means there is a somewhat tangible link to them. Knowing that such a brutal crime took place, that there are so many secrets in the house, and that it is highly unlikely this case will be solved anytime soon if at all, perhaps a collective of people wanting the house to be haunted, willing the house to be haunted, makes it haunted (if that makes sense). Perhaps we want the remnants of these people to be there because we want answers or simply because we spend so much time thinking about the lives these people might have lead, we want to feel a connection to them in anyway we can.

I want to know if there is activity in the house, if it picks up considerably around the anniversary of the crime. Guess there's only one way to find out :P

ah, nothing like the sounds of snoring...ok, you can all wake up now

Well, it sure seems like we get loads more sightings and ghostie comments in August and around Halloween. Once during a seance we had a lady from New York (supposedly a voodoo priestess kind of gal) who suddenly got up and said it was "wrong to stir up things!!". I think if Lizzie kept quiet during her lifetime, she is not about to spill the beans now via a Ouija board!

With the big boom of the Internet (Youtube, facebook, etc) and of course all of these ghost groups and TV shows, everything that squeaks and flickers gets reported and recorded and discussed ad nauseum. Martha McGinn used to tell about the marble rolling and child giggling above Lizzie's bed (third floor), which resurrected the kids in the well thing- again. But mostly I blame these travel shows for getting the ball rolling and guests who wish it to be so for keeping it rolling. Yes, if you believe and want it hard enough, you will see/ hear/smell something. Shoot, sometimes they have me half convinced I smell perfume. Seems like a floral or lavender scent wafts down the front stairs from time to time.

99.99% of these odd things happening have a perfectly reasonable explanation-old house, heavy traffic including big motor coaches passing by, doors which are not plumb, people talking on the street and under windows, air conditioning going on and off in an old house where lots of holes had to be made to accommodate it, etc. Once in a very great while there is some puzzling noise I can't explain.

I think what is truly frightening is sitting in that red velvet chair in the sitting room, looking at that black sofa and the doorway behind it, when you are alone in the house, and try visualizing WHO stood there and what happened. THAT gives me goosebumps. What happened inside that house- and how one human being could do such crimes turns my blood to ice.

But if people have a good time being scared and enjoy the paranormal, who am I to be a wet blanket. Nobody who has died has ever come back to tell me its all bunkum, so I guess we shall find out one fine day when we cross over through the veil to The Other Side!

Have they tried to speak to anyone who lived there before Martha? Is anyone still alive who might be willing to talk about their time in that infamous place? I, frankly, think the place is exciting enough without ghosts, but I do believe in them. I think since ghosts have become so much more accepted in the last few decades (like Lizzie's fame and, ahem, homosexuality) more people are happy to talk about what they saw, heard, or felt than ever before.

What I'd really be interested in hearing are the EVP's captured in various places in the house. I'm very much into the paranormal.

Is there a history about who lived in the house over the many past decades? I can't imagine it sitting empty. I do believe that many people can "pick up" ghostly manifestations. Psychic ability can be developed. We live in a Universe of many possibilities.

I created a list from the census, in The Hatchet
Vol 2, Issue 3, June/July 2005, called "Some Residents of the two properties On Second Street," pages 38-39.
--Sources, US Census and Len Rebello's book.

That is the "Razing the Leary Press!" and "Demolition Begins!" issue. Our Mark Amarantes did a photo shoot of the demolition of the Leary Press, over time, featured there.

There were 38 people, not including the Bordens, from 1845 to 1920, just in census. The article in the previous pages by me tells the story of the McGinns- a bit of their life there and the changes they made thru until it was sold to Lee-Ann Wilber & D. Wood.

City Directory info may be culled to name more residents- that would take a line by line eye scan looking for the words "Second Street." Knowledge of the number change is necessary as well- to round out the list. So far, probably a count of 50, not including Directory info.

Thanks, Kat. I recall writing to the Mc Ginns, and they sent me a postcard of the house. It's sad that the city can't restore the sidewalk area and add some trees.

There was a seance last night. Naturally the house was packed to the rafters. I did not attend it but I understand Andrew was angry with us for the "re-enactments" but very pleased about the flower bouquets left at the cemetery. I understand the table tapping and spinning was fierce. And 4 fellows, two from South County Ghosts went into the cellar and all had a fine old time trying to conjure up a manifestation. Andrew did not like the card reading going on up on the third floor with all of us gals. One of our guests was very good at it, using a regular deck and we all had our cards read outside Bridget's Room (where "Uncle John" stayed last night.

I somehow think that Lizzie would love a good seance. The spirit world has so many layers, and we, the currently embodied, "tune in" according to our individual abilities. Never give up trying. Spirit manifestations happen in a myriad of ways.
