Mysterious Migraine Auras

Post by stargazer »

Do any of you ever get migraine auras ? They come with a painful classic migraine, or with no headache at all. They are visual disturbances, and can be rather frightening when they first appear. There are many types. Their arrival can be sporadic. I had one and thought it was a stroke. I was looking at a clock, and there were numbers missing. I saw zig zag white semi circles undulating on the side of my vision.

I ran to the internet, and typed in "visual disturbances." Sure enough, there it was. Scintillating Scotoma they call it. Anyway, I learned to enjoy them, and they are gone in 20 minutes. I never had them until I started to wear glasses, and use a computer. They are most active in July for me. I have had them in both eyes. (but not at the same time) No absolute word on how they are triggered. I often wonder if cats get them, because cats do some weird things. You cat owners know what I am talking about. The weird stares, etc. like they are seeing things. Well, they are seeing things.

I had a mild one yesterday.

Is it shaped like a letter "C" and look like it's made of clear crystals? My doctor is closed mouth about what they are but I have seen them on the net. He did say they occure in the brain, not the eyes. I had my first one a few years ago when I was coming from my dark garage into bright sunlight. Thinking I was going blind I raced on down to my doctor's office but he wasn't worried about it. Yesterday I had my forth one in about seven years. Each one comes farther apart from the last one and each one is less intense then the last. The first one I had was a doozy but the last I hardly noticed. I first notice a blind spot near the center of my vision then I start seeing a spot of "crystals" that grows bigger into a "C" or a horse shoe laying on it's side. It keeps getting bigger until it disappears around the edge of my field of vision. After 15-20 minutes it's gone.

Mine are like that, Steve. The occipital lobe is involved, they said. I can imagine you running to the doctor, because they are just plain weird. Some of mine remind me of half a bottle cap with the jagged lines. I had one that had a tiny bright blue square at the end, and some of them have what looks like a tiny spinning ceiling fan. I have tried looking at one dead on, but that never works. I wish they were at least accompanied by music ! They appear when they want to. I have tried triggering one, but no luck, so far.
