Was that a typo in the article, or did the author really write it like that? It was the step- mother.

"There were other suspects although the police elimated them quickly. Emma said she was out of town at the time, but the neighbors reported a coach in fron of the house earlier."

I never read or heard of anything of her carriage or anyones carriage for that matter in front of the house. Have I missed something?

Is the author referring to John Morse, the girls uncle or was there a friend of the family named John Morris?

It does sound to have such a versatile way to read it, but I love books so much and I feel like a traitor for coveting such techno stuff. Hahaaaa

Must be a mistake since Abby was their stepmother. Hmmmm. Good catch, Snokkums. I'm interested in the book so I'm looking forward to some reviews if anyone here reads it soon.

Snokkums, Mark Chase a hostler said that he saw a buggy outside the Borden house with a man sitting in it, so that may be what someone meant by carriage. Apparently he later said at trial that it could have been closer to Dr. Kelly's house.

This theory has of course been presented in book form before.

I don't believe Emma had the gumption to murder anyone, although I believe she had a pretty good idea Lizzie was planning to murder, and she did nothing about it. She may even have encouraged her to do so.

(I even believe she sent Uncle John down to handle the damage control. I think his weirdness the day of the murders stems from Lizzie taking out Andrew in addition to Abby. Yes, I believe all three were in on it, to that extent. And, to that extent, they were all guilty. So, yes: I'll buy that Emma's involvement extended that far. I think she and Uncle John lived in fear that Lizzie would some day lose her marbles and blab. I think Emma "willed" herself to outlive Lizzie, just barely, for that reason.)

My theory: Emma hated Abby far more than Lizzie, and that she hated Andrew for marrying her.
That, down through the years, Emma played Iago to Lizzie's Othello. That is, that she poisoned Lizzie's mind as much as possible. Remember, both sisters made a stink about the "Half-Sister Imbroglio." Not just Lizzie.

("Lizzie, if you truly wish to annoy Mrs. Borden, why don't you steal her gold watch? I'll cover for you.")

Emma's advantage over Lizzie: She didn't run around, mouthing off about Abby, aboard ship and at the dressmaker's.

Oh, no: Emma was all about propriety. On the surface.

I've no wonder where Lizzie first heard the "She is not my mother; she is my stepmother" line.

So, yes: In every way, except actually wielding the hatchet, Emma did murder her father and stepmother. To that extent, I agree.

(Emma could have gone a long way to cooling Lizzie's heels and ameliorating things in the household. All evidence points to the contrary.)

I have always thought Emma was an instigator, and I believe she fed Lizzie a lot of negative thoughts.

I believe that Emma's dislike of Abby stems from the fact that Sarah’s death bed request for Emma was that she take care of baby Lizzie, which she did, until Abby came along and took over. Abby took away Emma's responsibility of fulfilling the promise she made to her dying mother. I think Emma highly resented her father for bringing this woman into their household.

I have always thought that Emma had something to do with it. I don't think that Lizzie would have come up with the idea of hating her and killing her without emma giving her an idea. I think that Emma was a big influence on Lizzie.
