Why didn't Emma come back?

Post by snokkums »

I have often thought about this. I know Emma wasn't to thrilled about the people Lizzie was entertaining -- the New York actors and such, and she left primarily because of this, but why didn't she come to Maplecroft after Lizze quit entertaining them?

Did she like seclusion? Didn't want to be associated with as accused murderer(even if it was her sister)? I thinking it was just alittle more than she did'nt like the people Lizzie was entertaining. Somehow or another I think that she felt her job was done in terms of protecting and caring for Lizzie.

YES, We do not know why Emma left.

Though we can speculate, it would be wrong to assume that she left because of Lizzie's entertainment habits or because of the actors she had over. This rumor was spread by "know-it-alls," writers who think they have all the answers to the Lizzie Borden saga.

We don't know why Emma left.

We don't know why Emma left

We don't know why Emma left.

We must click our heels 40 times and recite that.

It's fine to speculate that Emma left for any scenario we wish to discuss, but in truth we do not know.

All we know is that she complained to her minister that something terrible or very distasteful was happening at Maplecroft.

What ever it was, she expressed her intolerable ability to stand it any longer and it was suggested by the minister that she move out or get away, which she did. (if I remember it correctly?)

There is also a group out there who believe Lizzie was having an affair with her chauffeur. Who knows, perhaps she was having naked rituals and dancing around the house peeing in the corners? We don't know.

We don't know and should not assume that it was because of her entertaining. Though we can not rule it out, we should not assume we know why Emma left.

Well, if we knew why Emma left, we would, most likely, know why she and Lizzie never spoke to each other again. All we can do is speculate.

It seems that Emma and Lizzie didn't have any serious differences when they bought Maplecroft and moved in together, otherwise, why jointly purchase a house? If that was done for the sake of appearances, why would Emma abandon Maplecroft and Lizzie? She had to have been aware that tongues would wag as a result and everything done thus far for the sake of appearance would be undone. So, the simple answer is that there were no serious differences between Lizzie and Emma when they bought Maplecroft. The break seemed to occur after Lizzie started entertaining actors and theater people and that may or may not have had anything to do with it. Personally, I have difficulty believing it to be the sole cause for the breakup. Emma was already living with a rather notorious person who was ostracized by many in Fall River, and that didn't seem to bother her to the point of wanting to leave. I doubt that the actors would do much further damage in tarnishing Lizzie's name, or Emma's by association, so I doubt that notoriety was the primary focus. Lizzie might have taken the attitude that she didn't care anymore what people thought or said about her, so she could have become less inhibited than Emma wished. That probably would have happened over time and perhaps the actors were just the final straw for Emma, but Emma's attitude never softened after that. If Emma feared more outlandish behavior and left Maplecroft as a result, she apparently didn't attempt to reconcile after the behavior ended. There just seems to be something weak about the argument that Emma left as a result of Lizzie entertaining theater people. The split was about something Emma thought to be very serious, and it was permanent.

I didn't know that Emma had talke to her minister about something going on in the house. That's interesting. Least we know there was something going on that Emma didn't like. But not to communicate with her sister anymore? I mean I don't live with my parents and brothers, but I do on occasion talk to them. Just strikes me as odd.

I suppose it might be fair to infer that Emma's focus was in getting away from Maplecroft rather than getting to anywhere. There wouldn't be much need to talk it over with a minister if Emma had found the house on the ocean she'd always wanted, for instance. Emma retained a half interest in Maplecroft, she had every right to visit any time she wanted, with or without permission, and she chose not to. Emma's focus was in getting away from Lizzie. Lizzie must have crossed some line Emma had drawn, and Lizzie was the one person I expect Emma would have been the most tolerant of.
