As I mentioned above, when rot is complete thee is little you can do to save a post or rail, etc.
But whenever possible, the original trim was reconstructed and saved.
Below are some corbels, which many call gingerbreads, in essence, brackets.
A little bondo can go a long way.

Doing it all myself was quite the job. This included placing up the staging posts etc. Being a sailor, using block and tackles, and plenty of rope, made a difference.
Strip 3 or 5 layers of paint and saved the existing cedar shingles.
Looking at some of my photos I can see how I took foolish chances at times. People walking by would stop and watch, wondering when I would fall.

Maybe I was just so tired from driving around that day that by the time I had reached and crossed the bridge it just felt like a longer drive to me ..Other than that I could've been sleep driving (just kidding) again thanks for all of your excellent replies and info.I am waiting to purchase a new scanner this weekend and then I will share my pics with this lovely group..

Absolutely stunning, MB! Thank you for sharing all the work you put into your beautifully restored front porch. The love the photo of your finished front porch with Maplecroft in the background!

MY, MY.... I ALWAYS EXCITE MYSELF WHEN I'M WORNG.
NO, NO, it is very kind of you to say I am never wrong.... but I must admit and confess...
I was wrong.
There is a photo of Maplecroft with SHUTTERS. BUT ONLY ON ONE DOUBLE WINDOW ON THE SECOND FLOOR. It's on a photo which I have seen many times and never noticed it.
There are not shutters on the first floor window or the third, but there is one on the second floor window on the front of the house in a photo I found in Parallel Lives. Page 904.
ALSO, the old photo I posted in one of my post above, the one with the old car out in front of Maplecroft. I had to use a magnifying glass. But if you look carefully you can see shutters on the second floor windows....Cool!
Stefani Koorey tells me that there is an old newspaper illustration which depicts Maplecroft with shutters. Most photos do not.
So, live and learn. The important thing is to set it right if you get it wrong.

You're got that right, MB. We have all been wrong at one time or another; we are all human beings, and therefore we are not perfect.mbhenty wrote:... So, live and learn. The important thing is to set it right if you get it wrong. ...

I agree, MB, it is a very cool picture. Here is the same picture you are referring to, that a magnifying glass may not be needed.mbhenty wrote:... .ALSO, the old photo I posted in one of my post above, the one with the old car out in front of Maplecroft. I believe this may be the newspaper illustration that Stefani is referring to. I found this one under the images option when I googled 'Maplecroft with shutters'. Apparently this picture was in the Fall River Daily Herald, July 12, 1893:mbhenty wrote:... Stefani Koorey tells me that there is an old newspaper illustration which depicts Maplecroft with shutters. Re: Maplecroft
Beautiful job with the porch. You always have so many interesting pictures.
I had seen the picture of the house on page 904 but couldn't tell if I was seeing shutters for sure. The snow in the picture distracted me so I may use that for excuse of not seeing clearly as I'd hate admit I need glasses.

Re: Maplecroft
Thank you for posting this article, MB!
I am so glad that the "Old Time Friends" fireplace mantel was found and reunited with the fireplace in Lizzie’s bedroom, where it belongs. I know there was a thread regarding this mantel and it was thought that it may have been sold. Here is the link: http://tinyurl.com/lcz78jp
Here is the link to ‘a peek inside Maplecroft’, which Stefani posted on Mondo Lizzie: http://tinyurl.com/km5tj3c
The shutters were found in the garage, and the exterior of the house will be re-painted to its original color. How cool is that?
I had to chuckle when I read where Kristee Bates stated: “I always wanted a doll house to restore.” Well, Maplecroft is a bit larger than a doll house, but there is certainly a lot that can be restored, interior and exterior.

Re: Maplecroft
Just struck me that if the new owner turns Maplecroft into a bed and breakfast she could name it the Bates Motel. Sorry for the unforgivable blasphemy, MB...
Not to mention a very inaccurate play on words.

That's funny Deb...
Then again. The new owner has heard that one many times, I hear.
One thing I can say is that though one may not see any difference to the outside of the building, plenty is being done on the inside.
To give you a perspective on the junk that was left behind by dube, (D) I have seen 3 dumpsters filled. And I mean one of those huge long dumpsters, Filled!
Maplecroft is being cleaned up. Sterilized!
The front of Lizzie's garage is the cleanest I've seen it in 20+ years.
