Men in the victorian era...?

This is a very random question, but I know that if anyone would know it's someone on this forum. In my w.i.p. novel I want Lizzie to have a nostalgic smell that reminds her of her father; good or bad. A trigger smell. I researched men's hair pomade, but can't find it before the 1920s. I have no idea if he smoked pipe tobacco. I'm at a loss. Any ideas for Mr. Borden? Thanks
