Hi Kat,
Both Dr. Jabez Bowen and Dr Ephraim Bowen existed, descendants of the Rehoboth Bowens. It seems that line has a plethera of Doctors incuding a William, also. As for the second story I believe it was probably an embellished seed of truth. How much truth is anybody's guess. Would love to know about the apothecary across the bridge!
