Very interesting account.
Well know. The story was written up in several newspapers at the time of the Borden murder, as papers all over the country scrounged for information that may had led to the real killer.
Of course, there's no proof or truth behind it.
Shows you how easily a rumor can be spread by a media, newsprint, which many hold as credible and persuasive, and in many cases, a primary source.
Of course, the best primary source is legal court testimony. We must lend some repute to the printed news, but they are wrong many times. But, in our research we must start somewhere, exhibit proof or evidence from somewhere.......and newspapers are relatively upstanding for the most part.
As you read in the article in my post above. The newspaper gave the story, but also corrected it by stating that it could find no truth in the Andrew Borden/Schooner Jefferson Borden connection.
There was a book written about the Schooner Jefferson Borden and the troubles on the ship. It was published sometime in the mid 1870's. (I'm not familiar with that publication)
In that book there is no mention of Andrew Borden. Also, it lists the owners of the schooner and Andrew Borden was not one.
So, it is safe to say it was all a pack of falsehoods, rumor, or gossip, which was scooped up by some anxious newspaperman and given life without much research.

Below was another Schooner story out of fall river. In it it mentions that the Jefferson Borden Schooner became known as being haunted, along with the ship in the story.
