Just returned from a sail to Martha's Vineyard this week.
So, since it's slow here on the forum, I thought I would post a couple of photos. Vineyard Haven inner harbor is a refuge for old wooden Schooners and sailing vessels. The harbor is spotted with vintage Yawls, Ketches, Catboats etc., all tucked safely behind Vineyard Haven's stone breakwater.
Two of these Classic ships are the Shenandoah and the Alabama. These Schooners sail out of Vineyard Haven with a crew of youngsters, age 9 to 16 with a training agenda........or more of a summer camp program. Kids are taught about sea life, sailing, boat upkeep and all around responsibility. Great program and opportunity for youngsters. Programs last around 6 days and cost around 900 dollars a child.
The Shenandoah, black hull, is the worlds largest schooner sailing with no engine. It is a replica of an old ship, built in 1960s.
The Alabama, on the other hand, is an old boat. It is a gorgeous ship. White hull. It was built in the 20s and spent its time as a pilot ship down in Mobile Alabama before being sold and ending up in Massachusetts.
In the photos you can see all sorts of antique sailing vessels.
