Happened to stumble upon this old newspaper article. This particular one comes from the NY Times, but it was featured in lots of newspapers of the day. The year is 1926.

I don't understand why they say in it that she was unmarried at the time of Lizzie's trial. I can't make sense out of that.

Probably misinformation, she was referred to as Mrs. Churchill at the time of the murders. It was probably unimportant anyway, defining Adelaide Churchill in terms of Lizzie Borden was likely the only interest she held for many, unfortunately.

Well, anything with Lizzie's name on it was pounced on back then - and now. I agree, Yooper. Saying she was unmarried in 1892 was a blatant error.

She was kinda famous in Fall River, for being Adelaide Buffington, the daughter of the mayor. And they had a huge house in Fall River. But I think her tie to Lizzie Borden overshadowed even that.

From the Knowlton Papers Glossary:

CHURCHILL, ADELAIDE (BUFFINTON) 1850 - 1926: born in Fall River, Massachusetts, daughter of Hon. Edward P. and Comfort (Taber) Buffinton. She married Charles H. Churchill, an employee of the water department in Fall River, and was widowed in 1879.

Thanks, Harry. "BuffiNton" - no 'g' in it. I always get the two names mixed up. I wonder if her mother was related to the well-known "Taber" (Tabor?) family, largely known in Marion.
