Cagey Emma

Post by augusta »

I thought this was a little sneaky. For someone who couldn't recall a lot of stuff, Emma is on her toes with these questions:

From the Trial: Koorey/Widdows edition; new page 1421; old page 1547 They are talking about the argument Lizzie and Emma were said to have in Lizzie's jail cell, where Lizzie is said to have said, "You gave me away," and "I won't give in one inch."

Q: Now, Miss Emma, do you recall a story that was told by Mrs. Reagan about a quarrel between yourself and your sister?
A: I didn't hear Mrs. Reagan say anything about it.
Q: No, but do you remember there was a story round of that kind?
A: Yes, sir.

She goes on to deny, deny, deny any aspect of the argument she is asked about. She was about as forgetful as an elephant. :elephant:

I think it is alittle sneaky too, but I also think she was tryikng to protect Lizzie. Not give to much away. Didn't her mother make her promise to take care of little Lizzie? I think she was on her toes with those answers. I really do think Emma thought Lizzie was guilty, but she was going to protect Lizzie.
