I came across an old post that I thought was interesting, and I got to thinking.

The poster had stated he had come across two personal letters that Lizzie had wrote. She signed it just "L.A Borden".

As with the writer of this post, It strikes me odd that she would sign a personal letter like that.

Is it just the way New Englanders sighn their letters, or was Lizzie just a cold natured person ? What do you all think.

I think that was a fairly common way for people to sign their correspondence in the nineteenth century. Abraham Lincoln used to sign all his letters "A. Lincoln" (even his letters to his wife!). Letters in which he wrote out his first name in full are very rare and correspondingly valuable.

I think I can understand. Being from the Mid west and living in th south, I have been told often that I am very stand offish and cold. But. not knowing you, I tend to stand in the corner until I get to know you. I think Lizzie might have been the same way.

My grandmother, born in 1899, generally signed her letters M. Harper....my grandfather signed H.L. Harper....I'm sure it was typical for that time. Sadly, our era will have very few, if any, letters to look back on and preserve!
