Please don't shoot me for asking (I'm currently reading through previous posts and am on page 5 of at least 45 or so) but something is bothering me- why did they wait at least 1 week before doing a proper autopsy on both the bodies? I'm reading that they were murdered on the 4th but the autopsies were on the 11th?
My only guess is that they weren't as advanced as we are today and therefore, it took longer.
I promise not to shoot!
Dr Dolan conducted autopsies on both bodies at about 3:15pm on the day of the murder. (twinsrwe posted an interesting photo of Andrew stripped down and lying on mortuary boards in the dining room before it was done. It was some time ago and we were discussing whether Andrew wore socks! I can't remember the thread, might have been 'All about Andrew'.) Anyway the autopsies were conducted on the Bordens' dining room table! Nice!
On re-examining the bloodstained clothing which for some reason, (probably stinking the cellar out) John Morse wanted buried (it all was and was then dug up again) Dolan realised that a particular hatchet chop at the back (between the shoulder blades) of Abby's body hadn't been noted.
Therefore, Dolan and a doctor from Boston performed a second, thorough autopsy, at the Oak Grove Cemetery after the funeral, which was on Saturday 6th August. At that time Andrew and Abby's heads were removed. Later the skulls were boiled, and later still, produced at the trial.
Actually, I ought to verify my statements -- the information about the autopsies was in 'Goodbye Lizzie Borden' : Robert Sullivan Pages 36 and 45. The funeral date Page 38.
