This is specifically for Franz and anyone else who is interested...what is your opinion about Amanda Knox?

there is WAY more to that than we know. I think she knows something-- or did something she isn't admitting to

I believe she knows something, not necessarily she did more than what was discovered. I'm glad I live in the U.S. so that I couldn't be tried twice for the same crime!

I have heard that she was convicted definitively, wasn't she? What happened since then?

Her conviction was overturned on appeal; then the appeal was reversed by a new trial court that reviewed the evidence; that verdict and sentencing are on final appeal right now. Amanda is back in the States since the verdict was first overturned and is unlikely to be extradited should the most recent verdict of guilty and sentencing be upheld. This case is a good example of police bungling, contaminated evidence and the suspect (Amanda) lying. Initially she attempted to deflect suspicion from herself by pointing an accusatory finger against a man who had absolutely nothing to do with the crime or anyone involved that night. My understanding is the one person already imprisoned for this crime has confessed, swearing that he acted alone.

I think that Amanda Knox (and her Italian then-boyfriend whose name I can never remember!) were both innocent. The prosecutor is just plain crazy--he listens to "mediums" (which are forbidden to Catholics, which he claims to be) and he thinks every crime has some kind of ties to Satanic rituals. He belongs in a loony-bin. Also in prison--he was under indictment while prosecuting Knox!!!
They have a very weird idea of
justice in Italy--esp. Perugia. I'll never go there.

Oh NESpinster, Perugia is a very beautiful town and has nothing to do with Amanda and Italian justice system. Welcome to Italy and to Perugia and maybe I can be your guide.

Oh, Franz, I am sorry! You're right, it's very unfair of me to blame all of Italy and all Italians for this one very sad case. I do apologize and I am very, very sorry if I hurt your feelings!
Actually I have a very good friend who has no Italian ancestry of which I'm aware (she's American like me) but she's had the good luck to travel several times to Europe. And of all the countries she's visited, her absolute favorite is Italy!!

She doesn't just like Italy, she
loves Italy, and she's shown me photos she took while she was there. Each picture is more beautiful than the last! She loves shopping there too, lol!
I would have said I have no Italian ancestry either, but I am an amateur genealogist and only recently I traced one of my family lines back to England--no surprise, I have millions of English ancestors. But what stunned me was the maiden name of the wife of one of these English ancestors--her first name was "Camilla" and her last name was so long that I can neither write nor pronounce it, but it most definitely is Italian!!! Both her parents were Italian, all her grandparents were...so unless someone made a mistake in this line somewhere I actually have Italian ancestors myself--it might even account for my black hair!

Camilla and her family all came from Florence and I am proud of them!
And I admit I would give anything to visit Rome (I love history!), Tuscany, Venice--okay, all of it!
And you are very gallant to offer to be my escort--when do we leave?!?

Don't worry NESpinster. I didn't feel at all offended. And I am not Italian, am a universal citizen.
Yes Italy is a fascinating country and has plenty of good things to offer. You are welcome!

It always sounded like there were plenty of weirdos who were available to do the job. I have little opinion of the case because when it was most active all I knew was the occasional whatever on TV, if I saw it. Amanda sounds like an intelligent person who had a find opportunity to study in Italy. It is too bad she got involved with a boy friend, etc. I would be very careful about that sort of thing in a foreign country.
