Upgrading the Forum

Post by Adminlizzieborden »

I am backing up the databases and the files relating to the forum just in case things go badly, but I am updating the forum today to the latest stable release. This will help to insure the safety of the site.

The forum may look a bit different for a while, as the modifications that make this site look the way it does will change until updated as well----and some of the features that I added will be lost.

Content should remain.

If there are problems, I can revert to this version and we can continue until I figure out why the install failed.

Wish me luck!

Stefani

I logged in and thought: WHAT THE HECK??? My next thought was that the forum had been hacked, big time!!! I logged out, and then back in again, but the appearance of the page was the same as when I logged in the first time. It is difficult to tell if I am actually logged in or not, because the page appearance looks the same as it did before I logged in. Can we change our 'skin' appearance back to the one we had before the update?

Let me know the errors you encounter exactly as they happen to you. I need to know.

I am trying to get some skins for the forum. That will come soon. Plus, if you experience log in problems, uploading, attaching files/photos, etc., post them here. I will make a to-do list.

Thanks!

Thank you for responding to the skins, Stefani. I am looking forward to them! Hopefully, the one I had before the upgrade will be available.

Something I checked every time I logged in on the previous forum was the members and the time they had visited. I don't see this option on the new upgrade. All I see now is who is currently logged in.

Okay. I can look around for that new modification. This forum uses a whole new backend php. So the modifications are still slow in coming out. There are a few skins I can upload and make available. I will do so soon.

Keep the suggestions coming.

Mbhenty, can you still not post pictures? Does anyone else have problems with attachments?

Stefani, I am not receiving ‘Topic reply notifications’ on the threads I am watching and/or posting to, nor am I receiving ‘New private message has arrived’ notices.

The last ‘Topic reply notification’ I received was on Fri 1/30/2015 5:00 PM.

There are three notices after 5pm on the 30th, which I have not received a notification on.
There are three notices on the 31st, which I have not received a notification on.
There is one PM on the 31st which I have not received a notification on.

I don't understand why I was getting notifications up until 5:00pm on the 30th, and then nothing!!! ????

I notice that, at the moment at least, we only have three board styles to choose from. Will the others be restored? (Comparatively unimportant, of course.)

If you wish to add an attachment, do not use the Quick Reply. You should click on the Full Reply and Preview button.

There you will see two tabs. OPTIONS and ATTACHMENTS. Click on the attachments tab and follow those directions.

That should do it.

The board styles are behind the times for the new backend. We are safer from hacks, but less styles to choose from. But as the new version catches on, and it will very quickly, people will create new styles and I will add them if they look like we would like them. There is a World of Warcraft style, for instance, but I wasn't sure if you all wanted that one. Any takers?

I really like the SE Square Left skin. It is very similar to the one I had before the upgrade; the biggest difference is the very top of the page of the new skin is much more attractive than the one I had before. The over all color combination of the new one if very pleasing to the eye,

The only thing I don't like about it is the red and green line running down the far left of the page. I'm not sure just what those lines indicate. I've just never liked the colors of red and green together; I know they are Christmas colors, but I just don't find the red and green color combination attractive. However, it is something I can live with.

I really DON'T like the new redesign! It is my understanding that the white as been toned down, but in my option it is still too white. I have never liked our Avatars and personal information displayed on the right side of the page. Why does everyone have to have the same look? We no longer have the choice of skins to choose from? As I stated above, I really liked the SE Square Left skin, because it was very similar to the skin I had before the upgrade. Can't this new design be one of the skins?

Our basic profile information is now displayed, without our real names showing, but we no longer have the option of going into a members profile to find their previous posts; this was a feature I used quite often. (The option of going into a members profile to find their previous posts was something that I found extremely frustrating when a member chose to cancel their membership, because this feature no longer existed. Allen is a good example of this.)

I'm very disappointed with this new change.

Please change it back to how it appeared before the redesign.

To subscribe to a topic, you should hit the wrench icon at the top of the thread and choose your preference.

If you have your email notification choice turned off in your own board settings, this may affect this.

I will attempt to tone down the white further.

I will not change it back to before the update, but I will make the other choices available again as skins (since the upgrade). I think this is a good compromise.

The default skin will be this one, however.

By the way, the new board skin is called Subway. You can select one of four at the moment: Prosilver, Prosilver SE, Subway, and SE Square Left.

I found out how to get into a members profile to find their previous posts; just click on the user's name! The only time this does not work is when a member request to be removed from the forum.
