Hip bath?

Post by LABRhush »

I know the Bordens weren't entirely up to date with their amenities, but they also weren't living as rudiculously low as some plp believe. So I wondered... how do you think they bathed? I know women only washed their about 1 a week and bathed about 1 a month. So was it just a sponge down for maitanance? Did they have a hipbath? So many of those things are never talked about.

In the witness statements, “bath” is mentioned once: “August 8th 9 o’clock in the morning, I spoke to Miss Russell about her and Miss Lizzie being in the cellar on the night of the 4th. Miss Russell said Miss Lizzie had the toilet pail. Miss Russell said she offered to carry the pail. Miss Lizzie says “you bring the lamp”; and they went into the cellar. I said to Miss Russell, Miss Lizzie came down into the cellar alone after that time. Miss Russell said that could not be. I said, O, yes she did; it was about ten or fifteen minutes after you and she went up stairs. Miss Russell said that must have been while I was taking my bath.”

Alice stayed in the Andrew/Abby bedroom, so I’m assuming Alice meant not a full bath (there was no bathtub upstairs) but a birdbath. I do not know with certainty.

Yes. I know what you're referring to. Thanks! So I'm guessing just a quick rag bath in the basin. Certainly they had a more involved way of bathing when needed?
