Lizzie & The Snake

Fall River Daily Evening News, Aug. 27, 1883:

"As Miss Lizzie, youngest daughter of Andrew J. Borden Esq. of this city, was walking across the yard Sunday, she came upon an unwelcome visitor. She was somewhat startled but speedily dispatched his snake-ship."

Apparently, Lizzie’s love of animals didn’t extend to snakes.

I thought the phrase “speedily dispatched” rather ironic, in light of the event of Aug. 4, 1892.

I think it is so cool, fun and refreshing all the trivial nonsense that newspapers published back then. It is what has made the newspaper research part of this hobby so fascinating.

Lizzie would have been around 21-22 years old. Gotta wonder who told the paper about the incident. Maybe Emma thought it was a funny one to play on her sister. Who knows.

Good find, Cagney, I had not read this little episode previously.
