That "Winged Griffon" hairpin is 13" long!!! She could have done some damage with that.

Oooo, those are absolutely beautiful, thanks for sharing the link with us, Kash! My one grandmother used to watch wrestling on TV way back when and there was a female character that showed up at the matches called Hatpin Mary. When the guy who she didn't want to win was near her she would jab him with her hatpin. Those things look pretty lethal to me, wonder how many actual murders were committed with them?

Don't know about murder but hatpins were once used as a woman's defense. It was easy to pull from your hat and use to defend yourself. If aimed at a particularly vunerable spot such as the eyes they could be very effective.

I'm old enough to recall the old hat-pin adage from my mother!
We just didn't wear them in the 60's.
(The 1960's, that is)

I do remember wearing one in my lapel at my mother's insistance a few times but then we gave up on the whole idea.

There's a song by the inimitable Elsa Lanchester (The Bride Of Frankenstien, yes-she released several albums of "Bawdy Cockney Songs-Total gems) called "Never Go Walking Out With Out Your Hatpin" Part of it goes,

"My Granny was a very shrewd old lady
The smartest woman that I ever met
She often said now listen to me Sadie
There's one thing that you ner must forget
Never go walking out without your hatpin
The Law wont let you carry more than that
And if you go walking out without your hatpin
You may lose your head as well as lose your hat"

The "head" a pun on 'maidenhead' as later in the song she tells us

"My mother set a very bad example
She never heeded Grandmama's advice
She found that when you give a man a sample
The sample somehow never does suffice
In fact its rumored I might not have been
If Mum had not gone out without her pin"

Its a great album. Elsa had such a unique voice!

Great song, Kash, I love it! Does Elsa actually sing or more like talk/sing the words? She does have an incredibly unique voice, I still recall the I Love Lucy episode she was on, the suspected axe murderess! I did find a reference to Hatpin Mary on this site:

Hi Susan-No she actually sings! In this great range of voices, from giggly girlish like in the "hatpin" song, to deep and soulful ballads. It might be available at Amazon.com
Remember her as the crazy aunt in "Bell,Book, and Candle"??
She has an autobiography that I've read too.

Ohmigawd yes, I had forgotten abut Bell, Book and Candle! Oh, I haven't seen that in forever, time to get to the video store! What was that comedy movie she was in with Truman Capote? Murder By Death? Where she plays the great Miss Jessica Marbles, such a fun movie.

LOL. I think if she had used that 13" hairpin she would have went for the heart. It probably would have gone clear through and out the back. At least with Andrew.

Kat! I own a copy of 'Bell Book And Candle" I loved that movie! (God, Kim Novak was such a beauty!) And Pyewacket the cat-did you know that after filming was completed, Kim Novak was so attached to him that she took the cat home with her? And continued to call him Pyewacket?

That movie was a big hit in our house.
May be why we ended up with 3 Siamese, over time.
No, I didn't know Kim Novak brought that cat home!
We have it taped from TV, from about 1985?

Anyway, next time I will trust my instincts and post the movie times!

Four degrees of separation: Lizzie Borden to Kim Novak

1. Hatpins, antique. An online collection of them, one of which is emblazoned with a hand holding a hatchet. Lizzie Borden may have handled a hatchet, and no doubt had a fine selection of hatpins from that era herself.
