The Almy Murder

Post by augusta »

Ran across this in the Lizzie Borden Sourcebook (page 47):

"Dr. Frank W. Draper, the noted medical examiner of Suffolk county who gave expert evidence in the Almy murder case, was in this city yesterday afternoon......"

What Almy got murdered? Does anyone know the story behind it? It must have been somewhat popular, if the reporter knew readers would recall it just by saying "the Almy murder case". It wasn't Andrew's partner, was it? He died several years before the Borden murders.

Rebello, page 54+, lists a brief bio on William Almy, Andrew's partner. He died in 1885. No mention of the cause of death but I think if he had been murdered we would be aware of it.

It may be referring to this murder in New Hampshire in 1891 by a Frank Almy. The book below is a fictionalized account of the crime.

"Richmond, Robert. DEADLY SUITOR. Carlton Press Company. 1996. $15.95 ISBN 0-8062-5362-2
Fictional account of a murder that took place in Hanover, New Hampshire in 1891. A young girl, Christie Warden, was brutally murdered by Frank Almy, when she rejected his amorous advances. Richmond draws parallels with Almy's trial in the 1890s and the subsequent revision of New Hampshire's capital punishment laws."

The time frame (1891) certainly fits. This small article appeared in a NY newspaper:

"Middletown Daily Times
Middletown, New York, U.S.A.
3 December 1891

Fannie Warden Threatened

Hanover, N.H., Dec. 3.
Miss Fannie Warden, the sister of Christine Warden, who was murdered by Frank Almy, has since the murderer's conviction received a number of letters which contain threats against her life. They are signed Jack the Ripper, and warn Fannie that Christine's fate will also be hers. "

Thanks, Harry! I'll bet that's it. I wonder if Frank Almy is related to Andrew's partner. The name sounds familiar.
