Film footage and Valentino

Post by jamfaws »

Does anyone know if any Pathe news type footage exists or was ever produced informing the cinema going public of Lizzie's death? or even the murders/trial? or any known footage of anyone associated with the case?

I know Lizzie loved the theatre and was also wondering if it was known if she ever went to the cinema? i've just gotten into watching silent films in a big way, have always been fascinated by the actor Rudolph Valentino, and like Lizzie I have many books on him (3 new ones were out this year!)wonder if Lizzie saw any Valentino movies, and what she thought of his early and tragic death (the year before she died), anyone have any thoughts on this?

Where did you get the information that Lizzie was interested in or had books on Valentino? I have never read that any place.

I have never read of any instance where Lizzie attended a movie show but that certainly doesn't mean she didn't. We know she attended live theater often, however not in Fall River.

Sorry, I meant I have many books on Lizzie as well as Valentino, I knew what I meant when I wrote it, but can see it reads differently to others, but it's a thought, although i'd imagine cinema was lower class theatre in those days, so she probably wouldn't have been interested in this form of entertainment, sorry for the confusion.

No problem at all. We recently had a thread about what books Lizzie read or/and were in her library. We know liitle for certain what they were so any new information would be welcome.

Lizzie made numerous trips out of town so there is every possibility she may have attended a motion picture.

I would think Lizbeth would have gone to the movies--it's a good question.
They sure had some nice theatres back then- ones you could get dressed up to go to!

A friend of mine is the local city attorney, and a very serious fellow. He insists that at one point he saw some old news footage of Lizzie, most likely from one of the old news reels. I've never heard of any such thing, and he's an old film buff but never has been able to find anything either. Considering how much film footage has been lost to the ages, though, it is entirely possible.
On a slightly different topic (but on the topic of speculating about things Lizzie might have done), I'm wondering with the passage of women's right to vote in 1920, if Lizzie ever took advantage of it and voted. I wonder if the Fall River voting records still exist from back then?

Stuart -- In Rebello (pg 290) he lists Lizzie's name & those of her female servants from poll tax records, 1921-1927 & notes women won the right to vote in 1920. He doesn't say whether or not she voted. It's a good question. I would think that she did, but I suppose it also would mean she'd have to go out in public to do so.

Does your friend remember anything about the footage? year, event etc i've often wondered if any footage survived or was indeed filmed on her or anyone connected with the case, as anyone seen footage of anyyone else from this case?

No, it was just one of those "I've seen something, somewhere, but can't put my finger on it" moments.
He though it might have to to with her possibly going back to court. The only thing that I can thnk of that fits that description is when she and Emma were fighting over the Andrew J. Borden building around 1923. Did she attend court personally?
