Villisca house
My husband & I are considering going to Iowa this fall to visit the Villisca house. Has anyone been there, or know of anyone that has visited?

This has been an interesting story for me for awhile now but it is also an extremely heart wrenching one in that not only 2 adults were murdered but 6 children also lost their lives to a horrible death.
The EVP's that have been recorded in the house give me the creeps. As much as I am interested in this unsolved case I don't think i would want to visit the house because it seems to me to be filled with evil. Here is a good link: http://www.villiscaiowa.com/

I haven't seen the video or read the book, just been to the website and have read an article from Roadside America. I am extremely curious and would like to visit.
The article I read didn't focus so much on the tragedy as it did on the uniqueness of the house. The owners apparently did a true restoration,
taking out the plumbing and electric. The author said that visiting this home was like literally stepping back in time.
I contacted the owner Dawin, asking if my husband & I could be placed with another evening group. But he said that he does not mix groups, which means Mike & I would be left ALONE if we leased it. I need to recruit some other people, because that would frighten me too much.
Kat, when were you thinking of going?

I feel the same way. It seems to have an awful aura about it- I really would not want to enter that house. The EVP's give me the absolute willies.SteveS. @ Tue Oct 16, 2007 1:20 am wrote:This has been an interesting story for me for awhile now but it is also an extremely heart wrenching one in that not only 2 adults were murdered but 6 children also lost their lives to a horrible death.![]()

Well, the Borden House was your Waterloo I thought-- but you faced that one, right? And survived. Not that you have to go to Villisca- just that you have shown you are a strong person- no pushover.
Oh I am going to go to Villisca as soon as I get rich and famous- not!
Seriously, I would like to go, but have taken too many trips lately. I've got one more trip in me this year and that's not to Iowa. Sorry.
I was thinking about it, Cheryl- the night before and the day you posted- I don't know how we 'connected' on that.

I can certainly respect that! I have to admit...I haven't heard all of the EVPs you're talking about. I watched a quick youtube that had a few
recorded children's voices, but none of them gave me the "evil" feeling.
I can't access the ones on the Villisca website.
I have this intense curiousity about the place. I love old homes and things. I also have that thrill-seeking gene that presents itself in this type of activity, as opposed to say mountain-climbing or jumping out of airplanes :)
Kat, there is an interesting article written by a gentleman who investigated overnight at the home by himself @ www.chasingmidnight.com. He did not capture anything. His article, however, is well-written and worth reading.

I was just watching a show this weekend called Haunting Evidence where these three people go to places that are alleged to be haunted and places where cold case murders have been committed. Two of them are psychics and the third is a paranormal investigator.
This particular show I saw they investigated the Villisca murder house which was quite interesting. They had some spooky things happen while there and the two psychics came to a conclusion on who they think committed the murders.
Their take was that Frank Jones hired William Mansfield to murder Josiah Moore, but, probably, not the whole family. Mansfield or "Blackie" as he was known was an experienced butcher who knew how to kill quickly and also reveled in the feel of blood on his hands. It really was a compelling show, whether you believe in psychics or not. Heres a link to the web site, I don't know if the show will be playing again soon or not.

There was a show on WE channel last night- part of "The Secret Lives of Women" series, and they had a horse whisperer (well, I guess an animal intuitive), and Jackie from "America's Psychic Challenge" show (she was like 2nd or 3rd in that challenge) and this lady who went to Villisca. I had no idea it was going to be on! I just happened to catch it. Then it repeated at 2 AM and I forgot, yet changed the channel back to WE around 2:40 AM, watched 3,000 commercials and then caught the whole Villisca segment, which was really only about 5 minutes.
The psychic is originator of some World wide psychic club but she explains they are (foremost) de-bunkers. Sorry I don't recall the letters of her organization.
We approached the house at night and it was snowing. We entered the cellar thru the flat ground-level exterior door that had snow on it. But when we went down the steps with her there was snow on the steps. That didn't make sense. She said she felt "them" hiding in the cellar. Who was hiding was not disclosed. It was a snippet of a longer show, I think, edited down for this one.
There were sitters-in-the-dark in some of the rooms in the first floor of the house and a camera filming night-vision (I think that is what it was) and some people in 2 different rooms experienced something at the same time (they claimed) as some "mist" was captured on the monitor (they claimed). It wasn't much of anything, but seeing the inside of the house was interesting and it seemed pretty small. The whole house seemed pretty small. It was a very small filmed segment too.
[I have not looked at the links that were previously provided here yet. I was looking for a topic to put this note just now].
This visit was not in the show description. And went to the TVGuide online, they only gave this:
WE

Psychics
A look at four women with special abilities used to help solve crimes, connect with the dead and Episode Detail: Psychics - Secret Lives of Women.
Maybe someone here knows of this organization? It was a new one to me.

I keep thinking about this case... why would someone do something so horrible?
I have ordered a documentary about the case, but I also like books... Kat, (or anyone) is there a good, well researched book? I have read the reviews of Villisca and someone said it had no notes and didn't cite referneces, which made them skeptical of the books facts...
