Storm not quite half way through.

Photos taken an hour ago. One is the front of Maplecorft.

I shoveled the driveway. By the time I was done there was three more inches on the ground behind me. Most of it was blown there. Nonetheless.

Holy Moly, MB! Thanks for letting us know that you are OK, as well as for the pictures.

I found this link, which contains a slideshow of this massive storm:

Yes twinsrwe:

Piece of cake, really. Most of the photos are taken out my window. Though last night went out to do some shoveling around 1 in the morning. When my back started to hurt I decided to go back inside the house. When I did, I noticed the time. 5"30 a.m.

Cool slide show.

-----------------------------------------------------------

You bet Harry. A hundred miles an hour in my 150 Ford pick up is a piece of cake.

Ten m.p.h. on a pair of skis just doesn't work for me. Scary. Skis and horses, or anything I don't have a key to turn it off just doesn't work for me.

Here are a couple more photos taken taday.

Let me try this again.

One of the photos below is of the Davenport house.

Another is of the Hopper House, two houses up from Maplecorft

Another is of the sidewalk in front of Maplecroft.

All taken during snowstorm Nemo. Come on now, Nemo? We are starting to name snowstorms now.

This is my favorite Photo. (kudos to my girlfriend. She took it)

It's sort of spooky.....almost looks abandoned.

I have a question? Please....don't reply to it. But.....what sort of peabrain puts a satellite dish on the roof of the front porch on the most historical house in fall river. (there are so many places you can place it on the roof hidden from the street)

I hate satellite dishes. Their so ugly. (check out the house below with the 3 pasted to its facade)

Those heavy snowstorms are no fun at all! Take your time digging out, don't over do it, none of us are getting any younger. By the way, what breed is the dog in the photo? I have three golden doodles who look exactly like him/her. Looks like more snow or freezing rain coming so be prepared!

Yes Yooper, will do....

Tomorrow suppose to rain. The next 4 or 5 days the temperatures are reported to be in the 40s. Great news if you want the stuff to melt.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Three Goldendoodles! Wow. I can imagine the Vet bills. We want to get another dog, but between the groomer and vet bills two dogs would break the bank, I'm afraid.

It appears that the poodle has become a popular breed to mix.

Yes a Goldendoole looks very much like my dog.

My dog is a Soft Coated Wheaton Terrier. His father is actually a champion. A show winner. But we don't care. We purchased him off a friend. We didn't even bother getting his papers. We have no plans to stud him. He's part of our family. It's all about the dog not the papers, for us. (papers, we don't need no stinkin papers)

Recently there has been a craze of mixing a Wheaton Terrier and a Poodle. They're called a Whoodle.

Three Goldendoodles? Must be a party everyday.

Oh, by the way. If you are writing a book. Don't leave the draft hanging around on the couch. My Wheaton makes for a lousy editor.

That latest storm has reached us as I write this. Corn snow, then rain, back to snow currently. On the bright side, in a few weeks the sun will be intense enough to start melting the snow pack and we'll lose a bit every day.

I also have a Standard Poodle and a Boston Terrorist. The Boston (Pipsqueak) has decided to take up pipe smoking a couple of times, she chews holes in pipe stems when she can get to them. Anything left laying around is fair game! She has me well trained to pick up after myself! From the front the similarity fades between your Wheaton and my mutts, but from the rear they are similar. "Whoodle"? Would a Schnauzer/Poodle cross be a Schnoodle? I've been lucky with their health, outside of shots, checkups, and neutering the vet hasn't been needed much.

This was our last Wheaton. It was given to us, but his previous owner wanted him back. Since he was a friend we gave him back. Sad. We had named him Dougal.

He was named after Father Dougal on the British comedy Father Ted.

Though he was a pure breed Wheaton, he looked more like a Wheaton/Poodle mix.

He was different looking from most Wheatons we have owned, and very different from our present Wheaton. Still, he also came from a line of champions and last I heard he was on the road competing.

Maplecroft has never looked creepier-- w/ or w/out the dish-- than it does at night, in that snow blanket.

Can you give any history about the Hooper house? I've walked by that house before & there is just something about it I find interesting.
Maplecroft does look deserted with the snow on the windows. The front door on the Davenport house is GORGEOUS. Thanks for the photos.

All I could think of was those very narrow hilly streets in Fall River. Between trying to park and the snow plows coming through it must have been a nightmare.

Yes:

The Hooper House must have been quite the place when it was built. A single family home once, it now holds 6 apartments, with all of it's beautiful woodwork mostly torn out.

It was build in 1874 and then had some extensive work done in 1878. The owner told me that the facade which protrudes from the front of the building was added some time in the 19th century.....perhaps why records have two building dates, 1874 and 78. When it was build it was known as number 1 french street. The Davenport house was number 3, the Kenny house, which is where Lizzie's garage is now, was number 5 and Maplecorft number 7.

Almost nothing is known about William Foster Hooper. He was a cotton merchant for the firm of Hooper and Buffington cotton brokers. That much is known.

There was a Foster Hooper who ran for mayor of fall river in 1854 in the first election held for the position of mayor in fall river. He lost to James Buffington, the first mayor of fall river. This fellow could have been W.F. Hoopers father.(?)

Very little is written about William F. Hooper. Even Parallel Lives does not give much info about him, and everyones in there. Hooper's mentioned here and there in several books, but nothing note worthy.

This much is true. He had money and built quite the house.

This is the most popular photo of the Hooper house. You can see the changes made to its facade since then.

I just love that house, but when I hear something as grand as this is torn up for apartments I feel really bad. Especially seeing they just got rid of the woodwork.
Thanks so much for the history, I haven't finished Parallel Lives yet but I already have a list of places I want to see when we go street hiking in Fall River. I'm going to keep it until I get there. I didn't realize that there were so many grand homes built in that city. To me they aren't just big old houses, they are works of art and the workmanship is just superb.

And to you Harry----- I loved that photo, I couldn't stop laughing.

I went snowshoeing yesterday, there's three feet of snow on the level with drifts up to six feet. How much snow remains in other parts of the country?

We got another 6 inches last weekend in the KC area, but thankfully with temps in the 50's now, it's history.

YES: :!:

Sometimes when you think it's all over. BANG.

Those who live in New England may remember the APRIL FOOLS SNOW STORM. (1997)

I was stuck in my car with a blind date at the time. A desastrous hook up in the first place. The snow was a pleasure. All 18 inches of it. I was so happy when I dropped her off.

I remember it snowing once in May when I was a child. Can't remember how much fell or piled up, if anything. Of course stories like these to those who live in Northern Maine or Alaska are but a bore.

Gosh, looks like a lot of nothing has been done to that poor Hooper house's exterior in at least 11 years.

Two feet of snow! Very good, Harry!

Yes, it is rather late, but not unheard of. July is the only month we can count on to not have a freezing night, but even that is not absolute. July 12, 1985, I had to scrape the frost off my windshield!
