Does anyone know how the Borden dairy products company started? Was it a Fall River Borden that did it? If so, what relation if any was the person to Lizzie?
I have never heard any reference to the dairy company when I've been in FR. Then again, I never thought to ask.

Sherry, the founder of the Borden company was Gail Borden who was born in New York State and lived much of his life in Texas. I don't know whether he was of the same Borden ancestry as the Fall River Bordens. He was an interesting man with creativity and vision. Here are two websites with short biographies of him.
http://www.lsjunction.com/people/borden.htm
http://www.famoustexans.com/GailBorden.htm
One of Gail Borden's early condensed milk factories was located in Brewster (a village in the Town of Southeast), New York, a few miles from where I live in Connecticut. The website below is for the Southeast Museum.

And this next website, which is also accessible through the one directly above, tells specifically about Gail Borden and the Borden company.

Yes, Augusta, Gail Borden was descended from Richard Borden of Portsmouth, RI. When I was looking up Andrew's Quaker background, I ran into mentions of Gail Borden a few times.
Try Googling "Richard Borden" 1638 Quaker you'll come across it in one of those family genealogy pages.

I have the Genealogy of the Borden Family booklet from the FRHS and there is no Gail Borden in a direct line from anyone near to Andrew. I checked up to 7th generation.
However, at 4th generation, William448, there is a notation:
"William Borden (448) lived in the vicinity of Fall River, and brought up a numerous family. His descendants are now widely scattered, and many of them are inaccessible and unknown to their own relatives. Those already found number between 300 and 400. Probably the whole number, could they be ascertained, would reach at this date (1876) nearly or quite a thousand persons."
This branch is quite removed from Andrew's.
That Thomas & Joseph split off and Andrew is 8th generation (total) but out of Thomas.
If Gail is related, I'd think it might be through William448 (children = 5th generation)

I have now officially beat my Edit record- mainly because I could not seem to format my text to match my info presentation-- it was easier then to draw it and scan it!

Wow! That's WAY back! They split in the 3rd generation!
We have Richard1
John5
John96--this must be the John, father of the John who was the father of the first Gail.
This John was born 1675 and married "Sarah Earl, of Portsmouth."
Richard95 in our Borden line, was his eldest brother.
John5 had a brother Matthew4, whose line is followed a bit at the end of the Geanology I have. John5 is not.
This is considered an excerpt, 1876, from a much larger work, but was extracted to show a closer lineage to Andrew/Abraham than what you have there.
Thanks for supplying the info!

It appears Abraham Bowen Borden (Andrew Jackson Borden's father) was a 4th cousin of Gail Borden III (I have also seen references to Gail Borden III as Gail Borden, Jr.) This makes Gail Borden III or Jr., the founder of the Borden Condensed Milk Company, a 4th cousin once removed of Andrew Jackson Borden, the father of Emma and Lizzie.
This morning while out doing errands my wife and I stopped at the Borden Bridge in Brewster, New York. This bridge spans the East Branch Croton River at the intersections of U.S. Route 6 (East Main St., Brewster) and U.S. Route 202; New York Route 22; and Putnam County Route 53 (Peaceable Hill Road, Brewster). A historical marker near the bridge reads, "The Borden Bridge - Across this bridge, during the Civil War, Gail Borden, Jr.'s New York Condensed Milk Company shipped condensed milk to the Union troops."
We had a few minutes to spare so proceeded up the street to the public library. In short order we found two local histories containing short summaries of the Borden company in the village of Brewster.
"The 'Borden Condensed Milk Company' was incorporated January 28th, 1864. The partners were Gail Borden, jr., Jeremiah Millbank and Elnathan W. Fyler, and the capital $30,000. The company erected extensive works and a large business has been carried on till the present time.... The buildings have been greatly extended, and 30,000 quarts of milk are condensed daily, the business employing a large number of hands, while the products are sent to all parts of the world.
"A person who visits this factory is struck by the absolute neatness everywhere apparent. Every portion of the business is conducted within the building, including the manufacture of the tin cans in which the prepared article is placed and sealed up ready for market.
"On the death of Gail Borden the management and development of his large interests in this county and elsewhere devolved upon his son, John Gail Borden, who succeeded to the presidency of the company, and continued to direct the three large manufacturing enterprises with which his father had been connected...."
The above is exceprted from the
History of Putnam County, New York published in 1886.
A more recent book that tells of Brewster's history, The Town of Southeast 1788-1988 was published in 1990 and describes some of the good works of John Borden, Gail Borden's son. His benefactions to the village included contributing to the replacement of a school that burned down, including the delivery of a large bell and a "magnificent clock." In addition he gave money to construct a town hall and a Baptist church. John Borden was also an organizer of the First National Bank of Brewster.

In the same LBQ as mentioned before, Issue Jan., 2002, pg. 5, "Lizbits" by Neilson Caplain, he informs:
"The Fall River Borden families are descended from John's two sons, Richard and Joseph. Lizzie's lineage is traced to Richard Borden, while Holder is descended from the Joseph line. Thus the two are cousins, albeit far distant ones."
The article is on the founding Borden families, based on Holder Borden the "industrial pioneer" of the clan.
This line would show as:
Richard1
John5
^
Richard95, John96, Joseph97, Thomas99, William101, Benjamin102 --all sons of John5.
According to FHG, the Milk Company Bordens descended from John96, whereas Fall River Bordens are descended from his two brothers Richard95 & Joseph97, per Caplain.
