Just my Opinion
I think Lizzie may have killed Abby & Andrew, & had been thinking about it for awhile-but didn't know how to do it.I think she wanted to poison them, but when that didn't work out she did the next thing that would be able to get.an Axe. She probably did it because Andrew was verbally & mentally abusive-living with him & Abby ( stepmother) who she wasn't very loving to Lizzie & Emma.I surely wouldn't want to live with them. But in those days I don't think women just moved out of the house on their own, unless they get married. They had the money to live better than they did-& that frustrated Lizzie. I think her real Mom suffered some sort of Mental illness and could of passed down to Lizzie & Emma.I read a book that said that Emma had her problems with Alcohol,& Lizzie liked to steal things.that shows me that something isn't quite right with that family.plus that Lizzie's mom passing away when they were young had to have left some scars. The weather was terribly hot & humid,& that can effect the mind too. I would feel betrayed if my Dad gave all the money to my step-mom instead of his own children. I don't think Lizzie was a bad person-I think she just had enough & lost her mind for a moment & realized afterwards what she had acually done.I think she told Emma what she had done and Emma backed her up on it-because they were close. Lizzie probably felt terrible after the fact but there was nothing she could do now.
I'm sure she took it to the grave with much sadness. In a way I felt bad for her to go to such measures.Just my opinion.

Hi bullet43, welcome to the forum.
You seem to have good handle (not the missing one!) on the basic facts of the case.
Personally I don't give any credence to the Emma-drinking story which I also vaguely remember reading somewhere. It's not mentioned in any of the standard books on the tragedy and that would be too juicy a tidbit for authors to pass up.
If you haven't yet gone to the Lizzie Borden Virtual Library you may want to browse there. It's a literal cornucopia of information on the case.

I know I ask perfection of a quite imperfect world

Hi!
I think that was a novel- Engstrom? Satterthwait? Hunter?
A drunken Emma who hung out in hotels and got beat up.
I don't think anyone believes that, do they?
Also, Lizzie didn't just lose her mind for a moment, she (or whomever) lost it from 9 to 11:15. That is what is so odd.
I think it's possible Sarah passed down some temperment issues.
I've thought if Lizzie was really regretful, why didn't she then dedicate her money and personal time to charity or church work?

A split personality was the genesis of the theory of multiples, as far as I can tell. But, yes you said split- maybe you mean manic depressive or bi-polar?
That seems more in tune with an organic disease- rather than a split which I think is a put-on. That's my opinion.
I've read the cat stories- do you know where they came from?

I've read a few articles on the internet about Lizzie was enteraining her friends, & Abby's cat kept jumping up on one of her friends.Lizzie got upset and took it down to the cellar & chopped it's head off. Abby wondered what happened to it,& finally days later Lizzie told Abby-"You'll find your cat in the cellar. I had also heard on the History channel or one of those learning stations about how a childhood friend of Lizzie's saw her throw a kitten down the well.
I think Lizzie had some kind of mental illness. I think her good side was good most of the time-but her bad side that she covered up very well was strange. I just don't think she's innocent.

Some of the cat stories come from Pearson. He tells stories, rumors, outrageous gossip, and then he says it's rumors and gossip.
Lil' Abby Potter tells of a cat being be-headed, much later in her life and I think her memory is a bit off...it's "off" on some of the other things she has told.
BTW: There is not one single web-site I have ever seen which has the correct information.
When someone here directed you to the source documents and to read the web-site here- they were right to offer that to you. That is as close as it comes because there isn't an agenda.
What we do here is sort of help each other unlearn the phoney stuff and replace it with what is real. Then speculation has a foundation in facts.
I kind of think Lizzie was sort of unbalanced too. Even her defense attorney Phillips said so in his book.
