HURRICANE SEASON 2005...

Post by theebmonique »

How many of our forum members have to worry about hurricane season ? I thought sucking up 3,000 of water from my basement because of the heavy spring rains out west here was bad...but I am thinking that the hurricane worries must be awful...especially with some of the damage from the 2004 season still so visible. I hope ARLENE...and any others which may follow...don't.

So far it was about a quick hour of getting prepared. Walk around the yard putting stuff away- lawn chairs, lounge, things like that. Checking for stuff that might blow away. Figuring if what wind we'll be getting will take my garbage pails. That is a delicate choice because I don't want them in my garage but I don't want them hurting anyone else's property. I think they'll be OK outside this time. My screen door warped so I tied that shut. Did laundry. (I only thought of that because the neighbors perfumed dryer sheet was blasting me while I was on the side of my house.) Turned the A/C up. Changed all the water in my water bottles in the fridge. It's tap water but I like to renew it if it's in plastic bottles. Made sure I had ice. Stufflike that. Take a walk around looking- oh and charging my cell phone- figuring how much cash and gas I have. Already have batteries.
I just bought 3 new Dorcy flashlights this week and put them around the house that day and already that same night my power went out and I used them!
There's a lot to think about, but today's preparedness was about an hour.
Last season it took far longer.

Virtually all members who live somewhere near a coast have worries during hurricane season, some of us more than others.

As far north as Massachusetts, we don't get as many big hurricanes, because they've usually been downgraded to tropical storms again by the time they reach us. And many make that turn offshore into the Atlantic before they reach us, too. We do often get some wind, rain and rough seas from the storms, but not to a great degree.

Still, enough people still remember the Great New England Hurricane of 1938 (400 homes in Fairhaven destroyed) and Hurricane Carol in 1954 (many millions of dollars in damage in greater New Bedford) that we watch the storms' tracks very carefully.

Our main concern is tidal flooding along the shore. Because of its valuable fishing fleet, New Bedford Harbor is now protected by a huge stone hurricance barrier, but most of the area has no such protection.
