I went to Newport last August. Loved it. On my last day there I woke up early so I'd have time to do the Cliff Walk. Basically, you walk along the Cliffs for a few miles and get to see those beautiful mansions. Or at least part of them. I walked up and then turned around and hiked back. It's a nice walk but it gets pretty rocky toward the end.Kat @ Sun Mar 12, 2006 12:50 am wrote:Wow I loved the drawings!
And then I went to Newport!
Whew! I came up for air!
Neat site Audrey!
Thanks!
Later on, I went back to the Tennis Hall Of Fame which is in Newport. I got to play on the grass courts there.Originally it was called the Newport Casino and the wealthy use to go there and play/watch the tennis. This started in the 1880s. Here's a picture of a woman playing tennis about 1880s or 90s. I'm not sure. I wonder if Lizzie ever played there? One of the things about this picture is the woman is not only playing in a long skirt but her wooden racquet also has no leather grip.

We drove around Newport the trip before last- October 2004.
It was wonderful to see the mansions.
I saw people walking the rocks and thought how intrepid they seemed!
We also vistied the Farewell Street house where Lizzie vacationed after her acquittal, and saw the King-Covell B&B at Washington Street as well.
Sherry Chapman wrote about these sites in The Hatchet, August/September, 2004, Vol.1, Issue 4, page 24, "Lizzie In Newport" just in time for our visit!
Next visit, I'd like to go promanade the shopping area.
Neat picture of the young lady playing tennis.
Thanks!
