How many of you get these automated calls from "Rachel" about your credit cards? I get a regular call at least once a week. MOST annoying!

I also get these calls, Harry, and I agree, they are very annoying! I have caller ID, which tells me it is a telemarketer, or an incoming call without a phone number - if I don't recognize the number, or there isn't a number showing, I just don't answer the phone. These calls are obviously a scam to get your credit card number. Real credit card companies do not use telemarketers to communicate with their customers.
As far as I'm concerned, dear Rachel can blow it out her ear!

I used to get the calls about consolidating credit card debt to somehow lower the interest paid. They were going to tell me how to put the debt from "all" my credit cards into one lump sum and make one payment per month. I got tired of hearing from them, I haven't used credit cards since 1979, so I waited until someone came on the line and asked him exactly which credit cards he was referring to. He hemmed and hawed for a bit and didn't quite know what to say, finally admitting to the stupidity of the call. I haven't heard from them since.

After multiple calls, I finally pushed 1 to find out what credit card "she" was calling about. In my case, the company knew I had a Mastercard. It turn they offered me a Mastercard through another bank.
I called MY Mastercard company to ask them for a lower rate and how this company knew I had that brand of credit card...and did they know that I was being offered a credit card through another bank. I told them I was concerned about my credit card security and the possibility of fraud and identity theft if this other company had my information.
Well, I got a lower rate on my existing credit card and was told they would handle the situation. I've never gotten another call.
Most banks tend to be unhappy if they know the info they provide is being offered to competitors to solict their business away.

I got a call earlier in the year from a recording that said if I wanna save a LOT of money on my credit card, press "1". At the time I was really upset with my card company, how expensive it was, so I pressed "1". A high-pressured salesman came on the line.
In short, he said if I paid them $1500 - on my credit card - they would get my interest rate lowered. He said I was "eligible" to get 9.9%. I had taken notes as he rattled on. I asked him the name of his company and I got their phone number. He put me through to their "broker" or something they called this woman, and I didn't like how she sounded. She was reading a script and saying I was being taped and I had to answer "yes" to every question. I hung up on her.
I called my card company and told them about it. They did not recognize the name of this company that called me. They did say it was legal. And they said they wouldn't recommend me doing it. Well, I thought, sure! They don't wanna lose out on all my interest money.
I had heard on tv that you can just call your card company and they'll lower your interest. So before I hung up on my card company, I asked if they would lower my interest, and the guy said no - that there's no promotional program of that kind going on right now. Hmmm ...
Well, danged if my phone didn't ring. It was that high pressured salesman. He said, "Did you hang up on us?" I said yes. "What's wrong? Don't you WANT to save any money?" I said yes, I would. But I said I don't like the sounds of them - I wasn't familiar with their company, and I wanted no part of it. He kept pressuring me. And I asked him, "Well, if you get my interest rate lower, how long will that be for? A month? Six months?" And he said very plainly, "For the life of the card."
Well, I went for it. Back I went to the woman who was recording my "yes's". One of her statements was that they are not held to getting me the 9% interest rate they mentioned. Then on came a woman who said she was a "financial adviser". She told me that we would call my card company together, and I was to say that "My financial adviser would like to speak with you." The "financial adviser" simply asked my card company if I can have a lower interest rate. It was lowered immediately to 13.5%. That was good!
But later, I get this packet in the mail from this company who lowered my interest rate, telling me I was a member of their clientele, and to send them money and they would do this and that and the other for me. No mention of this was ever made to me. I tore it up and threw it away, and they never contacted me again.
But then about 4 months later, I got my monthly credit card bill. And the interest rate of 13.5% was gone and was way back up there again. I called my credit card company, and I explained how that guy told me the lower rate "they" got for me was good for the life of the card.
The woman at my card company LAUGHED. She said, "Nobody can claim that." But she looked at our records and offered me 14.9%. That was really good. And to this day it has stayed (tho she said it could go up any time).
I wasn't about to call that screwy "company" back to complain. The guy who told me that it was good "for the life of the card" didn't put it in writing and would have just lied about it. And after receiving their Financial club crap in the mail, I wanted as far away from them as possible.
They weren't out to help anybody but themselves, that's for sure. I usually screen my calls, but sometimes I'll answer it blind and this stranger will ask me how I'm doing today. "Are you a telemarketer?" I ask. And they all say NO - and they ARE! "Oh, no, I'm not a telemarketer. I'm from your own gas company offering you a special promotional -" About then I hang up.
Nope. No more me saying yes to ANYTHING over the phone again. All I gotta do is think of that high-pressured salesman who got me, and I get mad all over again and don't care what the person is selling or where they are in their written speech. Goodbye!
