the good doctor
Here's another off-the-wall thing I was thinking. Visualize this: A well-to-do businessman who would have probably been a good catch in those days marries a frumpy, lumpy, grumpy, dumpy stump of a woman. He couldn't have thought she was a hot babe, but maybe his thoughts turned to pedaphilia so it didn't matter. She was probably so relieved that her future was taken care of in those Victorian days that she meekly went along with anything he did behind closed doors. The children exhibited signs of what could be the result of abuse- extreme shyness, feelings of alienation with peers, distrust, "weirdness", etc. There was no escape for them except through marriage, and that wasn't happening. The family doctor lived across the street. Could he have been paid secretly to perform a few quiet abortions, not knowing who the girls had been impregnated by? Could one of the girls have finally spilled the beans to him and he confronted Andrew in a rage? Then Andrew and Abby threatened to expose his having performed the abortions and wreck his career and reputation if he caused trouble? He could have killed them to protect the girls and himself. They probably knew about it but might have been relieved their nightmare was over. Just a thought, though far fetched. I should write for "Murder, She Wrote."

Well, of the wall to be sure but no theory is too strange to at least discuss in this case.
The idea of possible abuse cannot be dismissed here. It might explain the savage nature of the attacks. Possible motive or co-motive especially if Abby knew and looked the other way.
The idea that doctor Bowen was actually the killer though is, in my opinion, not surrported by the evidence.
Interesting concept for a fictional Lizzie story though.

I think your description of Abby is quite harsh. In the 1890s a heavier woman would not be considered undesirable by a great many men. Skinny didn't become "hot" until the '20s and then went out of style again until the '60s.
Do you think that all heavy women today are unhappily married, but put up with it for the security? Or that their husbands must obviously feel desire for somebody else?

Maybe the description seemed to fit because Abby married so late- as in passed up in her glowing youth.
However, I think, in her portrait done about the time of her marriage to Andrew, she looks a lot like Sarah Borden!
I actually think Andrew may have had a *type*! Fancy that!
Sometimes I think of the two as opposites:
Sarah as Scarlet O'Hara and Abby as Melanie Wilkes (is that her name?)
Sarah maybe being a live wire and Abby more down-to-earth and quiet.

You might be thinking of the same picture. This one I cropped. These are Abby, supposedly upon her wedding(?)
I have differing dates for these two, though, with question marks.
One is from Porter's book. They were taken at the same sitting, I believe, because the dress and hair are the same.
The picture we think of automatically, of Abby older, in profile, looks like a cropped picture from a group to me. Otherwise, the sitting is very
*Modern* looking.
