Lizzie float finishes second

Post by Harry »

From the Mobile Register in Mobile, Alabama comes this news article:

"Lizzie Borden takes ax for whacks

Friday, January 28, 2005
By EDDIE CURRAN
Staff Reporter

The brass members in the eight-piece Olympia Brass Band were cooling it on the turn at Bienville Park Thursday night, but the band's two drummers, laughing at and playing off one another, showed the crowd that Mardi Gras, season of fun, is here.

A crowd estimated by Mobile police at more than 40,000 enjoyed pleasant weather, fine music and the 56th time that the Order of Polka Dots have paraded through downtown's streets.

The parade was marred by an accident, when a member of the organization fell off float four as it passed the Civic Center. The woman, whose name and condition were not available, was transported to Springhill Medical Center.

Best float: A sharp-featured, wild-eyed Cruella de Ville. Here's a toast to the float-builder who created this rendition of the famed meanie from Disney's "101 Dalmatians."

A close second during the parade with the theme, "Wicked Woman": Lizzie Borden, pretty wild-eyed herself, staring down paradegoers with her blood-stained ax and dress. "

Second, indeed!!! Unfortunately no photo accompanied the article.

Harry, these folks from Mobile sound inspired.

There was an actress from 1950s and 60s TV comedies who often played bossy nurse or maid type characters and I believe her name was Rita Shaw. As Bridget she could whip the Bordens into shape in two shakes!

I might choose Beulah Bondi as Emma and maybe Mildred Natwick as Alice Russell.

How about a young Patty McCormack as a young Lizzie?

I dunno. . . I'm sort of leaning toward Bernadette Peters as Lizzie.

But could Bernadette Peters portray the "Lizzie personality?" How about June Lockhart as a mature Lizzie?

And, Charles Lane in the role of Andrew. He usually played a crotchety character.

Charles Lane turned 100 this week!
I would still like to see Kathy Bates play Lizzie.
I think that the late Josephine Hull would have made a terrific Abby.
And Roberts Blossom would be a great Andrew.
(No one but a vintage "Another World" fan would know who Bossom is. He played a menacing and murderous butler named Sven, back in 1977.)
