Lizzie's Remedies...

Post by Audrey »

John Douglas states on page 135 of his The Cases That Haunt Us book that Lizzie suffered from black moods and indulged in numerous remedies to deal with them.

What documentation do we have of this? What remedies?

Lizzie must have been an unusual person. You'd think that just because of all the money in the family there'd be lots of men after her but it doesn't seem that there were.

This makes me wonder.... What did Lizzie's neighbors and townsfolk think of her?

She participated in all the right things and seems to have been welcomes at the WTCU and her other volunteer activities...

Lizzie taking "numerous remedies" is a new one to me. That she was subject to moods/spells has been generally accepted but I never heard of her taking anything or having anything prescribed for them. Sounds like Douglass is trying to spice up his book.

I have a simple guide I follow on things like this: If the item is negative for Lizzie and it's not in Lincoln's book then it probably isn't true. Just kidding! Or am I?

The townspeople abandoned her pretty quickly after she was found not guilty. I guess I'd develop some dark moods and look for remedies too.

I think you have a point there Har! If anything had been known about Lizzie imbibing in anything--- certainly VL would have heard it in the elegant parlors she frequented in FR and would have duly reported it in her book...

Yes, and speaking of Lincoln's book, I am almost finished with part 4. Hopefully we can awaken that thread up by this weekend.

:?: Not real sure of any remedies, although I remeber reading somewhere that she suffered from eplipsy(?) and she did have what was called "funny little turns" what ever that means. But there are all kinds of things written about her. Some true some not so true and really far fetched. Guess we will never know.
